To be honest I'm really not quite sure what Niki actually does at Mercedes? I was a bit astonished when he was being interviewed by Brundle on the grid in Singapore with 15 mns before the start that he was seemingly unaware that Nico even had a problem at all!

Have you read Hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy? In that book the job of the Galactic president is to attract media attention so the rest of the government can get on with their work in peace. I think Lauda plays a similar role.
