Football 2011/12 Football Season

Arsenal's reaction to defeat is to sign Park Chu-young for £3-5mil. Not really a replacement for Fabregas or Nasri is it....

What do you expect Wenger to do?

Every player he is interested in goes to Man City, Man United or Chelsea...give the man a break. He can only buy one big player with the money he's got, and when he's interested in one the player gets snatched away.

I like Wenger, and I don't know whether the spending policy is his or the shareholders', but they've known Fabregas and Nasri were likely to leave for months now so if they don't spend money on a couple of proven talents over the next few days then they will be struggling to stay in the top 5 let alone the top 4.

He had a team that was just getting to it's best and it gets dismantled, this happened a few years ago aswell, where they sold some of their major players as they wanted to leave. Now those players that have left haven't achieved much.

Is there any point in spending all of your money on a great player? Or would you buy several decent players for the same money to strengthen your squad? I believe webber is doing the latter.

Another thing, no top player is going to make his way arsenal, especially in this state.

Maybe not right now but Arsenal have been one of the best teams in Europe for a while now and are known for playing beautiful football so there's no reason that they can't attract big players. I'm not necessarily suggesting they go out and spend on big £20mil+ players but when you lose two players of the quality of Fabregas and Nasri you need to be bringing in at least one player who can make a big impact immediately.

Frankly it's amazing what Wenger's done considering the money he's spent, but to me he's starting to come across as stubborn and too fixed in his ways.

He spent 12m on Chamberlain (who) and Walcott (who), so Wenger does know how to waste money.

When Joey Barton is available on a free and you don't sign him, just because he has thwarted you before on the pitch, thats his pride and it will be his fall. They have Sicknote V Persie and Rosicky manning the ship at the moment, when they get injured who we going to see.

< Insert smart-arsed comment r.e. Alan Hansen and Man Utd >

But yes, with Fabregas and Nasri gone they've lost a lot of creative talent and flair and they don't have a solid defensive backbone to fall back on so I do think it's going to be a tough season for Arsenal. Also, maybe this goes with the young players, but the Wenger teams of recent years seem to lack discipline, particularly when things aren't going their way. They've had a player sent off every game so far...

And Mr Wenger has the cheek to talk about Barton. Barton was an option and he is by far good enough to play for Arsenal, they also were chasing Mo Sissoko's brother or whatever it was from Toulouse a combative player. Wenger is facing the sack as a realistic prospect.

If someone payed you £50m to sign Barton, you should not.

He was our former player and would have loved for him to stay, last season he finished with a hansome tally of goals and assists, if you keep him on the leash, he is a mighty fine footballer. Arsenal are not in a position to look gift horses in the mouth. That squad is week, and if they didn't know that they were going to lose Fabregas and Nasri, well then they are just stupid. Quality does not stay at a former great team becometh average. I know enough Arsenal fans that have said changes were needed two seasons ago, and yes they do need massive change.

Transfer deadline day's a bit quiet, isn't it? But I know that Joe Cole is moving to Lille on loan, and Hazard isn't moving to the premier league. And Benayoun is likely to move back to Liverpool.

Scott Parker going to spurs.

Wenger's policy in the late 1990's- make big signings, but add young talents as well- seems to have fallen apart. Wenger isn't bringing players like Henry, Kanu and Overmars anymore, but he ain't unearthing gems like Anelka or Ljungberg these days either. I never thought I'd say this (as an embittered Leeds fan), but I feel pretty sorry for the situation Arsenal are in at the moment. We like Arsenal are selling quality (Gradel), and keeping donkeys (I'm trying to compare Billy 'goalshy' Painter and Niklas 'clubfoot' Bentdner here)

Fixed.

BREAKING: Per Mertesacker (75 caps for Germany) has agreed personal terms with Arsenal

In my opinion, good signing.

On this, so far, less than exciting transfer deadline day, I thought I'd post a link to story in the Bristol Evening Post. A bit of light reading regarding Pirelli's F1 top-man and Bristol City fan, Paul Hembrey.

He may now be the top man at Pirelli's motorsport section – charged with supplying the tyres for all the F1 cars in the paddock – but he hasn't forgotten his North Somerset roots, or his passion for Bristol City.
"I was raised in Cleeve, and went to Backwell Comprehensive School," the 45-year-old says. "I'm old enough to remember when Bristol City were in the top flight, beating teams like Liverpool. But that all seems a long time ago now.
"I still get to as many games as I can at Ashton Gate," he adds. "But it's not easy to get home these days, because my F1 commitments mean a lot of world travel.
"My main base is now Milan, but I have a holiday home in Cheltenham – so that makes it easier to get back to Bristol whenever I can.
.....
The divorced father-of-three had already carved out a glamorous lifestyle for himself, as head of Pirelli Motorsport in Milan, but he admits his life stepped up a gear after he managed to talk Bernie Ecclestone into bringing Pirelli into Formula One.

Sorry! How could I forget Pires?
Mertesacker could well be a decent signing, centre back been an Arsenal weakness for a few years now

Hargreaves has gone to City, seems like a strange move to me. From City's point of view he hasn't played any first team football for a few years now and they already have a very big squad. From Hargreaves' point of view I think it's unlikely that he will be able to play at the level he used to be at so I'm not sure he'll get many games.

If he does go on to be a useful addition for Man City I'll also be a bit annoyed as a Man Utd fan because I still think we could do with another proven central midfielder to be able to challenge Barcelona in the champions league.

Similarly I find Bellamy to Liverpool and Crouch to Stoke surprising moves.
