Mercedes and Ferrari in 'secret' Pirelli tyre tests

Thinking about RBR, their complaints ring quite hollow for me. This is a team that has had it's way with the sport for nearly 4 years now and are acting hard done by. Furthermore, this is an outfit who has, somewhat obviously, flouted the RRA with continuous developments that would imply contravention of the "agreement".

Having them lead the charge in this crusade against Mercedes is rather comical to me.

The tribunal date is 20 June, so before the next GP.

It stands to reason however that another Mercedes win would not have looked good for their case, and the public perception alone would have caused them a good deal of grief.

Luca Di Montezemolo said:
Let's hope Formula One can maintain its professionalism and we have faith that those who attempt to circumvent the regulations are pursued and prosecuted, or rather more prosecuted than pursued.
Sounds like he wants blood and won't be happy unless it's a very punitive punishment.

Wow, this is actually the only site where everybody is playing shoot-the-accuser over this issue. Whether its because this site is full of Brits supporting Hamilton(and thus Merc) or those hating Ferrari(the Favourite/Least Fav thread's comments say it all) , the discussion here is hugely one-sided with a bunch of people actually disregarding that a team broke sporting regulations and should thus be punished...
How totally ridiculous!!! I mean, come on, jingoism and the support of one's favourite team/driver combo is ok, but it shouldnt be taken to the extent where it impinges on rationality. Merc broke the rules for God's sake, and this thread isnt supposed to be a discussion on Ferrari/RB's ethics!!! FYI everyone, even Lotus and Force India have found Merc's(and Pirelli's) actions in this regard highly distasteful. So should we compile a long list of the reasons why we don't like them???

Here's why Soumya...

Red Bull is the little boy that cried wolf. They've always seized on the smallest opportunities to belittle Pirelli. No one has any sympathy for them anymore. And the other "plaintiff" in this drama has already gained massively. Ferrari has achieved their goal, as the 2013 spec tires will not be altered whatsoever. The tricks they have learned will remain relevant.

The advantage Mercedes has gained is quite negligible. They are clearly 3rd or 4th in the pecking order. Is there any reason to relegate them to a non-entity this season? Is a two engine series attractive? These are legitimate questions.

A suspended sentence for Mercedes is the only logical punishment. Cracking down on Mercedes is not only risky, it's completely unnecessary, as the competitive balance has hardly been upset. Those who think Merc need to be dealt with harshly are not considering the long lasting implications of such a measure.

CTA has a wide range of fans and I don't believe nationality or "jingoism" has anything to do with the general consensus around here. I think most people are rationalizing the fact that quite a few teams have "gotten away" with a thing or two over the years. And it remains to be seen why Ross Brawn is so sure that the FIA (Charlie) authorized this test.

KekeTheKing
Its funny that the discussion here is so one-sided.
Pecking order hasnt changed, really?? Lewis didnt drop backwards in Canada, they suffered relatively low deg there. But of course, you could always put it down to Lewis's great driving, as you will, i suppose...
And what "tricks" have Ferrari learnt, pray?? Are you referring to the test they conducted with their 2011 car?? So, the tricks they learnt there, with their Corse Clienti team and a 2-year old car are relevant, but we are to disregard the advantages gained by another team who brought their 2013 car to the show, with their regular drivers and their entire racing team?? What a lovely way of thinking...
Oh and please dont start on "nobody" having any sympathy for RB anymore. A forum where there is negligible divergence of opinion on a particular issue is a joke and is thus unrepresentative of the general F1-following public opinion.
You seek each and every opportunity to belittle RB and Ferrari and to find reasons justifying a blatant violation of sporting regs by Merc. And you want me to believe that these thoughts are guided by rationality alone. Well, good luck trying to do that, because most rational folks will see through your miserable defence. If you are a fanboy, be one, but kindly dont pretend to be guided by higher ideals. Its an insult to your, mine and every other CTA member's intelligence....

OK. Throw the book at em! I'm sure it will really prove a point.

When it became obvious in 2009 that both the Renault team and their drivers colluded to fix a GP result, what happened? Absolutely nothing. Why? The FIA needed them as a Constructor and an engine supplier.

That transgression was FAR worse than anything Mercedes have supposedly done. Many people realize that a super harsh penalty for Merc is not in the cards because a)the championship will not be affected and b)many teams have committed much worse crimes in the past and have gone completely unpunished.
