Pre-Season 2013 F1 Winter Testing: 1 - Circuito de Jerez, 5-8 February

Esteban pits after 56 laps, 12 short of a race distance...

An interesting comment from Paul Hembery: "We came away with plenty of data for the hard & medium tyres, very little for the soft and none for the supersoft."

Longest runs were as follows:
  • Hard - 20
  • Medium - 24
  • Soft - 12
  • Super Soft - 8

The Jerez circuit has masses of grip and is very abbrasive. Apparently it doesn't resemble any other circuit currently being used for F1 racing or testing!

Is anyone else slightly concerned at the drop off in Mercedes tyre performance (or at least lap times).... This suggests that the Mercedes is still eating its way through tyres on the longer runs, which can't be a good thing!

To be honest, virtually all teams had significant drop off on most runs. If you look at Lewis' last few runs they actually were some of the most consistent runs of anyone:

James Alison seems very happy about the Lotus - he said they ran with a lot of fuel throughout the "whole" test. There have also been comments about how well balanced the car looks on track. Remember last year, compared to the top 3 teams they had more gains to make as they only added the coanda exhaust right at the end of the season.

I have a feeling Lotus will be contending for the WDC and WCC this year. I reckon at the moment, RBR are slightly ahead, McLaren and Lotus following and then Ferrari and Mercedes. Although Massa set the fastest time of the test, there were some strange messages coming out of Ferrari throughout the week - I don't think they're in as good a position as they would like.

I'm also not sure how seriously to take Hamilton's comments about Mercedes lacking downforce to last year's McLaren. If that was the case then Mercedes would already be X tenths behind where last year's McLaren finished plus all of the amount they have gained, which is likely in the region of 0.5 - 1 second. That would mean they are in the region of a second behind and I don't see how that would be an improvement from last year - so he contradicts himself in saying they're in a better position compared to their rivals now. I know Hamilton has a tendency to moan about lack of downforce after he has looked at the time sheets sometimes, whereas the exact same car could be on pole the week before and he would be saying how good it is.

As much as I like Lewis - (as most of you will know, he is the driver I support,) I cannot help but feel that he isn't the right material to "bring a team forward" - he isn't an Alonso or Schumacher in that respect. I think he's trying to be something that he is not and I'm not sure how long it is going to last. Personally, I think he should just stick to getting in the car, and driving the hell out of it. He had the freedom to do that at McLaren, whilst letting all of the tech geeks do the rest for him. I wonder how long until he'll want to "go back home".

In 2009 Lewis was given a lemon, was dragged through the mire due to McLaren's lack of strategic nous, over protectionism and paranoia in Melbourne. Lewis' reaction was to drag that team and its lemon to two race wins, a second and two third places. Lewis is perfectly capable of developing a car and making it and a team do what he wants. Fact is McLaren always treated him as their boy and he looked up to them, despite their incredible lack of judgement and dubious honesty.

As far as tyre degradation goes, we shouldn't read too much into it. A lot is down to set up, and currently the Mercedes is understeering in and oversteering out of turns. If they manage to find a balance that tyre deg will sort itself out.

"What if they don't find a balance?"

Just out of interest tranquility2k9 how do you know that Hamilton 'Just got in the car and drove the hell out of it' while at Mclaren? Is there any evidence behind the statement that he just 'let the tech geeks do the rest for him' while there, as opposed to providing any technical feedback himself, or is that just an opinion?

Ross Brawn seems to think Lewis is just what Mercedes need in that respect:
http://planet-f1.com/news/3213/8482332/Brawn-Hails-Hamilton-s-Approach

And after all, the almighty Mr Schumacher presumably didn't do such a great job of his fabled 'car development' himself in the three years he spent behind the wheel of the Silver Arrow.

I would rather wait a bit longer to see how the new partnership gets on.

I don't "know" anything - it was a personal opinion as you said. I'm not suggesting he didn't give technical feedback or help develop a car, but I just think he is obviously one of the most naturally talented and gifted drivers on the grid, but not necessarily one of the most knowledgeable. Take for example his pit stop decisions at McLaren - he always let the team make them then blamed the team if it went wrong, whereas Jenson would often make his own decisions. Lewis had the opportunity to be more assertive and take control of those situations, but he decided to just "drive" and let mission control back at Woking do it for him. For sure, he needs to move on from this and mature as an overall package and maybe he will do this at Mercedes - but that is Lewis improving, not the Mercedes team improving and growing because of him. There are many areas like this where Lewis could improve and he needed to leave McLaren to achieve that, but it doesn't mean he's going to have much influence in taking Mercedes forward. I think a lot of Mercedes issues are just based on internal management / development. Overall, some of the talk he's coming out with recently - it all strikes me as feeling a little unnatural and disjointed. But again, this is just a personal opinion.

Ross is getting asked questions by the media - he isn't exactly going to come out and say Lewis has the wrong attitude and won't be any benefit to the team. He effectively has to come out and say what he is saying - therefore how much of what he is saying is actually true, none of us know. For sure, Lewis seems to have spent a fair amount of time with the team since he has officially joined them - but then you'd expect any driver to do that. He's also been able to compare his old car with the current one? Again, not exactly rocket science. There's nothing there, which impresses me whatsoever. It's all just PR.

And after all, the almighty Mr Schumacher presumably didn't do such a great job of his fabled 'car development' himself in the three years he spent behind the wheel of the Silver Arrow.

I imagine without Michael there, they would be in an even worse position now - he has been part of the whole "restructuring process" that Brawn keeps eluding to and I'm sure with his wealth of experience and knowledge he had more of an impact on that than most other drivers on the grid would.
