Sky F1 2012

Oh no. Just watching the preview and Hill just pronounced Vettel's name in the same way that Coulthard did. This is going to piss Brundle off

For all those (like me) that haven't got sky, the Sky F1 launch show is on Pick TV (formerly Sky 3 - freeview channel 11) from 10pm tonight. Now, on the same channel, is an interview with Damon Hill, Mansell and Murray Walker.

As much as I hate the fact that F1 is going off terrestrial for half the races, the fact that Crofty and Ant will still be doing free practice, except on Sky might mean I have to indulge myself for friday sessions, even on the BBC races. I'm sure 1 extra viewer on a friday won't hurt will it. :s

Argg...Damon Hill was the first racing driver I ever liked. My first memory of F1 was him winning the world title when I was 6. Yet, since he retired and aged considerably, he just gets on my nerves now. Everything he ever says is negative now. Looking at the presenting team, I only really think Crofty and Ant are going to be a draw for those who listened and watched their 5 live coverage. And Brundle obviously, who is one of the best pundits for any sport ever.

I watched that programm on pick TV, I didnt realise it was the sky intro to the season. I found it very boring. Brundle looked wooden and ill at ease and it told me nothing I didnt already know. Not often I find an F1 programme boring.

As an old timer (?) I have been impressed with every change to F1 broadcasting in almost 40 years, from the move to live broadcasting from highlights shows (to say nothing of changing from radio - wireless, Jen - to TV), the change from BBC to ITV, back again and now the move to Sky. Every change has meant that I've loved F1 more.
I am not complaining that there is more F1 on telly, that there is now a dedicated channel showing me interviews with legends, that there are more pundits offering more opinions more often.
Last year I had a choice, watch it on the BBC or don't watch it at all, now that choice has increased by 50%.
Shit really isn't it?

Think they are trying too hard. Who wants to see them talking in a studio?

My problem with it is, and will always be, the fact that taking a sport from terrestrial tv is damaging to it because it is taking it away from fans. I have access to Sky at the minute, but I am still not pleased. Cricket is the best example of a sport giving up viewers to sell-out on Sky. And Cricket made the move on the back of a surge of popularity too. This decision is clearly focused on the short term profits of the sport, rather than what is best for it long term.

I watched the program on Pick TV, and I quite enjoyed it, but my wife did not. I think that they have tried to get something for those of a more technical persuasion. I do think though, that they could struggle to keep the more casual viewer fully engaged.

I am now, with a week to go, wrangling with my wallet and my conscience to see if I can bring myself to get sky.

I think you're right.
I suspect their reasoning though is anyone who is willing to pay won't be the run of the mill casual fan, so will probably appreciate more analysis programs of this type.

Having said that, this isn't to be compared to the 1 hour pre-race build up we used to see on the BBC, it's a totally different program.
We have yet to see how Sky compare with regards to that.

As Bro points out, the BBC type fans will drop in for races and, maybe qualifying, and the tune out leaving Sky with a "few" hours to fill for those who want to find out more about the sport or get into the minutia. I'm sure at race weekends there will be plenty of crap from tracks side and lots of interviews with drivers fathers, brothers, mothers, masseurs, shoe lacers and any other hanger on they can find. Me, I'll be waiting for the more adult stuff thanks.

1 and a half frickin hours of build up? Why do you need an hour 30?! BBC 45 minutes was genius, decent wake up time and everything in there, half 4 is ridiculous, and I'm stupid enough to wake up for it!

That's probably for all the adverts.

Im not a casual viewer and I didnt find it particularly technical. I was bored because all the stuff it was saying I already knew from things I'd read. There were no new slants, no new info, no personal input. I found myself doing other things during the programme. Im usually glued to anything F1, go out of my way to watch everything and read a lot as well.I do have access to sky and will watch it when BBC is not available, but Im not holding my breath.. Not a patch on the Nic Hamilton documentary the other night.(I know it was a different type of thing)
