Manor Motorsport

When F3 team Manor Motorsport were given a place on the F1 grid in 2010 they commissioned Wirth Research to build them a car. Brawn sponsor Virgin became title sponsor and Virgin Racing was born

Virgin Racing

With Cosworth engines, Xtrac gearboxes and drivers Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi Virgin Racing embarked on their first F1 season. The VR01 chassis was the first ever F1 designed entirely using CFD, with designer Nick Wirth believing computer simulations were sufficient to not need expensive wind tunnel testing.

Inevitably the team had reliability issues early on and they also discovered the fuel tank on the car wasn't sufficiently large enough to allow the team to complete full race distance. Wirth Research got a dispensation from the FIA to homologate a new chassis and by Spain both cars finished the race.

The team regularly finished races but barely troubled the mid-field. By seasons end the team were placed 12th and last in the Constructors Championship based on a count back of minor placing’s having managed a highest finish of 14th.

2011

Russian carmaker Marussia have taken a controlling interest in the team for 2011 and Belgian Jerome d’Ambrosio replaces Lucas di Grassi. With the VR02 chassis Virgin will be hoping to move further up the grid in 2011.

about Jolyon Palmer did he actually check what happened to the last GP2 champion that signed with Enstone to be reserve driver... he did not get a drive even when Kimi walked out because he did not have the money

Sorry but I'm going to have to correct that. When Kimi was injured (not walked out) they put Kovalinen in rather than Valsecchi because they wanted a driver with race experience. Moneu had absolutely nothing to do with it. In fact Valsecchi had sponsors and Kovi didn't. Kovi quite famously refused to except the fact he had to pay for a drive. So sorry but thats wrong and not sure what it has to do with Palmer.

As for Mehri FB he was actually my first punt but he signed up for WSR so thought he was out the running! He must have dropped that contract pretty quick! Mehri is a cut above the average pay driver IMO so won't be dissapointed. He certainly gave Carlos Sainz a run for his money last year and unlike Max Verstappen he actually won the European F3 title!

RasputinLives I did not make myself clear this sorry

I meant what is the point of having a " reserve " driver when you're not going to call him when the opportunity presents itself . Heikki had been out of racing for a bit

I am saying Palmer has zilch chance of getting a drive at Lotus based on past history of the team - there is always talk of money problems and would have been better off going for this drive at Manor Marussia

So Mehri for the opening rounds with Jordan King as development driver it is.

Key to that is 'opening rounds' I reckon it'll be KMag after that.

I reckon we'll see Jordan King in the race seat after the end of the GP2 season in order to get him a super licence before the rules change for next season!

It pays to know the boss right?
