Mercedes have always had a policy to bring through their young drivers in the past and they've not had a chance to truly brag that their youth policy has worked in F1
Wendlinger - career was cut short by his Monaco accident
Schumacher - preferred challenges elsewhere until Mercedes got him back past his prime
Frentzen - failed to live up to too much expectation by being compared to Schumacher
Heidfeld - so heavily backed by Mercedes from F3 to F1 -- was overlooked by Ron to drive for Mclaren --- prior to Hamilton and really his career never recovered from that set back and overlooked for the seat in 2010 when Schumacher was offered a comeback. His problem was according to Ron bad for PR but then staying at Sauber for two more years did not do his reputation any good
Jan Magnussen - another one who was great in junior formula and raved about but his career barely got started
Franchitti - he decided through Mercedes Indycar was a better option than F1 ... he's not done bad for himself although you wonder
Zonta - was brilliant in other categories until his move to BAR paired with Villeneuve psychologically damaged him by being undermined as the NO2 by Pollock and his F1 career was never the same
Paffett - Had all the credentials to make it to F1 but unfortunately it never happened with the proposed Prodrive team using Mercedes engines for 2008 shelved at the last minute due to a row over teams must have their own chassis
Who knows he could have been a Mclaren driver if it were not for Hamilton
Di Resta ?? HIs career seems to be possibly on the same path as Heidfeld ?
I suspect after this season he will move from Force India unless they turn out to be a real contender but not sure where and how Mercedes will back him
