Grand Prix 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Someone other than Vettel is leading the Championship!

It may be strange to see, but for the first time since Abu Dhabi 2010 someone other than Sebastian Vettel is top of the Championship after Jenson Button won the Australian Grand Prix in commanding fashion with Vettel second and a folorn Hamilton falling foul of a safety car which allowed the German through.

Going into Malaysia it seems apparent that Mclaren have the strongest car as they were far and away the strongest team in Australia and it was only after having to fuel save for 90% of the race that let Red Bull get within distance, when Button and Hamilton were at full throttle for the first 8 laps, they pulled away at over a second a lap which provided a comfortable cushion even though it was wiped out by a safety car due to Vitaly Petrov breaking down on the main straight.

But the Australian Grand Prix raised more questions than it did provide answers, the only thing that we learned was that the not quite so new teams are still as bad as they were last season and Mclaren and Red Bull are the two fastest teams. Ferrari had a shocking qualifying but Fernando Alonso managed to drag it kicking and screaming into 5th place which suggests a better race pace compared to qualifying pace while beleaguered Felipe Massa trundled around in midfield like he was on a Sunday drive in the Australian parks.

lotus are the only team where a question mark still remains about the general competitiveness. Roman Grosjean qualified a remarkable third but was taken out early on by Maldando while returning champion Kimi Raikkonnen failed to get out of first qualifying but managed to fight through the field to finish a very strong seventh which suggests that they do have a strong car but need to ally qualifying with race pace if they are to take the fight to the top teams.

In 2011 Malaysia was a race full of pit stops due to the high degradation of the Pirelli tyres, and while the tyres this year are more conservative and stable, high degradation is still to be expecting and several pit stops are going to be the norm with an unpredictable weekend to come. The only thing to expect is the likelihood of a massive shower at some point during the weekend which would no doubt spice things up.

Vettel looked and sounded very down beat in his BBC interview. I don't think that I've ever seen him look like this before.

As to what will happen in the race depends on the weather. According to the hourly forecast on weather.com the chance of rain is 60% pretty well all day, with the humidity being 72% at 3pm, 77% at 4pm, 79% at 5pm, 82% at 6pm and 85% at 7pm. Sunset is 7:23pm. A lot will depend on whether or not it is a wet start. If it is dry and then rains further into the race it can become a bit of a lottery, ask Raikkonen about being out on wet tyres when the team was sure that it was going to be pouring down within the next two laps.

McLaren would, of course, prefer a totally dry race, they need to maximise their points before we get to the European races. As we know from the past big upgrades really start then.

Predictable front row nearly got spoiled by old man Schumacher.

Rosberg failing to deliver under pressure again? Surprised Mercedes didn't do two runs.

Vettel's strategy is interesting, could be big risk but because the tyre compounds are closer it might not be a bad thing.

It's a shame how Kimi has a 5 place grid penalty as he looks strong but that's how it goes.

Hope the race doesn't have a McLaren winner, if someone from there does win, I hope it's Hamilton, let's hope it will be a great race and a fight for the win :)

Every year when the clocks go forward I end up missing the build up to the race. I'm determined not to do it this year, but thought I'd warn others that may not be aware of it. CLOCKS GO FORWARD TONIGHT IN THE UK!!! 6:30 start for me I believe or is that 7:30...

Good performance by Sergio Perez today. If that Sauber has the same softly-softly tyre characteristic as last year, he might even move forwards from there tomorrow.

Two overtaking moves which are noteworthy in his entire career.

His pass on Rosberg at Spa last year was also pretty amazing. Apart from that last season he pulled what I thought was a quite daring non-DRS move for the lead in Korea (given nice fair defending from Lewis) and when he came out in traffic in Spain or Turkey (IIRC) he passed three competitive cars in very quick succession - on fresh tyres but they were still impressive moves.

That's not bad for a guy who spent most of his time in clean air. Admittedly he didn't seem to be the best of racers prior to last year, but then only a very few drivers (Montoya and Hamilton being probably the only two in this decade) are known for making multiple "noteworthy" passes every season. If anything, Vettel's defending is more noteworthy; the final laps of China and the early laps of Hungary last year were both great examples of fair but effective defensive driving when ceteris paribus many other drivers would have conceded significantly earlier. Personally I think that Vettel has proven himself to be a great driver by now.

/OT :D

He hasnt really had a chance to do these things like streak thru the field, but so far anything he has had to do he has done, he has had to come from behind and did, he has won a race in a mid grid albeit setup for the weather correctly
As for winning in not the best car last race he split the McLarens and drove really well

I believe Seb and Lewis have the most talent and can adapt and produce anything required of a race driver starting with out and out pure speed

He has a chance to answer his critics questions now especially starting 5th on the grid regularly behind McLaren and Mercedes

Thats the one other criticism aimed at Seb is what if he has not got the best car or a car that is even matched with the best . Can he look as dominant and fast

Remember Alonso had a slight dig saying Hamilton was one of few people who can win when the car is not the best
