Grand Prix 2024 Qatar Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Cling on to your undies and keep those moist towelettes on standby folks, the next thrilling edition of the 2024 Formula One season is about to smack us in the chops.

Fun filled and joyous Qatar hosts the 23rd race of the season and I know you just can't wait.

Qatar has the 8th highest nominal GDP per capita in the world and its approximately 310000 citizens are well looked after by the roughly 2.7 million expats and migrant workers who also live in their country. As a Middle Eastern state the sun shines all year round and it rarely rains which means you don't often see rainbows.

The track itself has some straight bits and some corners, goes around in a big loop and has a start finish line. The usual experience.

Fans across the world are on the edge of their seats, nails bitten to the quick, as we all wonder who will clinch the prized world constructors title.

Many questions may be answered this weekend.

Will Christian Horner concede Perez is awful and without Newey Red Bull are screwed?

Since Danica Patrick hosted a podcast talking about rich, powerful people being alien lizards, why has Damon Hill chosen to retire from Sky TV's coverage?

Will a mechanic at the lower end of the grid accidentally run over Ted Kravitz with a forklift and wipe that smug grin off his face?

Will McLaren try a different tactic by starting Lando on the grid facing backwards because that's the direction he seems to take off the line and this time he may actually gain a place?

Will Lewis Hamilton just say sod it and punch Max Verstappen in the balls?

Come Sunday afternoon, we'll find out.

I'm busy both Saturday and Sunday but I'm sure some of you will tune in.

Here are your weekend timings;

i wonder if they have sorted out the issue that was the closest to indy 2005 again. when the tyres could only do 18? laps in case. they exploded

Sergio Perez in his usual position of out in SQ1. i would love to have perez unwavering confidence where you can be so bad yet & yet have such confidence in retaining your job

Probably because he's no threat to Verstappen. You can guarantee if he'd been a Rosberg, Bottas, Sainz or even Piastri, he'd have been out on his arse a while ago.

The trouble for RBR is this season he's been the wrong side of shit and cost them the constructors title.

He is just proving just how dominant that RB23 was last year to finish 2nd ahead of everyone else

verstappen having absoulte shocker of a start 6th to 9th & back end all over the place. for me lando lost it in brazil. forgetting the rest of the season he made far too many mistakes that day

what a difference 5 hours makes. mclaren & particularly norris looked dominant. hulkenberg fantastic was pulling away from Verstappen. Verstappen was nowhere & yet 5 hours later Mclaren struggled. hulkenberg out in Q1 & Verstappen on pole for now

although it does look like slamdunk penalty on impeding george russell but depends if russell was on outlap or fast lap. if its fast lap might be 4th with 3 place penalty. if outlap verstappen should be fine

i agree, i dont get the penalty as it must be unprecedented to do penalise an outlap. as if lap doesnt count then surely the blocking doesn't matter

I'm not fully up to speed on what happened here but I can think of a few examples of where blocking someone on an out lap may be an issue.

1) preventing someone from making the start line for one last run before the session ends

2) prevent someone from having space to run a flying lap in.

3) creating space for your teammate to run a flying lap

4) preventing someone from adequately heating their tyres

5) preventing someone from gaining a tow

6) simply disrupting a drivers thought process.

7) driving below the mandatory limit.

There's a few for starters

If you're driving dangerously slowly (as Verstappen was) on a race track, when other cars are going quickly around you, you should be penalised. Whether it should be a fine, or a grid drop, I'm agnostic. However, creating a 1 place grid penalty, just because the other car wasn't on a fast lap was a bit ridiculous.

Also, it was the second lap that he had ruined - Norris' first lap on the final set of new tyres had to be abandoned after coming across a dawdling Max Verstappen...
