Wooooohooooo!!!!

Commiserations to the USA.

BREAKING NEWS: The USA have scored in the final seconds! Both teams go through with the USA top of the group.

Well done USA and justice has been done after the disallowed goals.

And it's over! The U.S. will advance to the Round of 16 as Group C winners................ :) 8-)
Should've been 2-0 USA but heck I'll take a 1-0 score any day of the week...................

The fact that the USA head the table now makes it much harder for England.

The USA will play Uruguay

England will play Argentina

No, that is the possible quarter-final line up. Both teams await the result of Group D tonight. England will beat the Group D winners (my money on Germany), USA will face the runners-up (possibly Serbia or Ghana).

Can now see England vs Germany looming large!

TBY beet me to it. LOL

Anyhow. At least we got through.

Well done to the USA, A team that is constantly underrated by a lot of people.

Oh yes, I misread the table.

See, told you I didn't follow football :D

Does it make sense that the winners from one group play the runners up from another?
Is that to give the winners from each group a better chance of getting through to the next stage?

Yep, Which is what I was saying to you about the other day. England, on paper I stress, should reach the QFs and then go out to one of the usual better teams.

The whole system is designed to favour the teams that are highest in the world rankings. While its not always the case that this will help those teams (France in 2002 for example) its a bonus for them anyway.

A greatly improved performance from England. The whole team played as a team, instead of individuals that didn't know each other. Can't ask for more than that. :)

Well done to USA for winning the group...

Absolutely! To win ones group makes the rest of the knock-out draw the "easier" route. That is one of the incentives for winning your group! Regardless of who you are, or how high up in the world rankings you are. To avoid a possible early meeting with a tough opponent, like Germany for example, you try your hardest to win the group. Come second, and you immediately have to defeat a tough team. Otherwise, finishing top would be the thing to avoid!

Of course, you still have to beat the tough teams that you do meet, you just want to meet too many of them!

And here comes the BS nationalism - its Germany vs England. Wouldn't it be nice if this match was about football in the media and not about World War II!

Yep, Every hack at the turgid red tops will be rubbing their hands together with glee. Cue days of pictures of Rooney in a Tin Helmet. Stories of past victories. Just like 66 blah blah fucking blah.

All interesting results.... And trying to predict this world cup is like trying to predict the lottery numbers but for the english out there here's a possible scenario on the assumption that results go as predicted and people are stupid enough to think (although there's always hope) we could reach the final.

last 16 - known Germany v England

Quater final - Argentina v England

Semi Final - England v Spain

Final - Brazil v England

Thats a pretty tough ride and it'll be interesting to see what hurdle they fall at. I think Germany are beatable from what i've seen so far and Argentina clearly have little in the way of defense and will be working on the policy of we'll score more than you. Spain i'm still not sure about but their last group game against Chile will be mighty interesting. Still a tough group to predict but i'd exppect them to have enough to knock off Chile and win the group. The other group game that could be interesting is Portugal v Brazil, again i'd expect Brazil to win but what if portugal did the unimaginable and won. That would stick Brazil in England's side of the draw and a possible last 16 game against Spain.

Time to go back to the predictor

I really wanted Ghana to win just so we could avoid all the England/Germany build up crap.

CAT is quite right, it's absolutely nailed on that we'll see Rooney in a tin hat; also expect the phrase 'Fight them on the beaches' to appear, towel references and all the other tedious nationalistic bollocks that always precedes these games. Even worse is that if we get through we'll probably be up against Argentina which will give the tabloid shites almost as much 'historical' ammo to fling at us like dirty monkeys.

Fortunately I don't read any newspapers and only frequent the more, err, serious/mature news sites such as the BBC, Guardian, Telegraph, Independent, Observer, etc.

And even then I don't read the sports related news so hopefully I won't notice any of that nonsense.

I was waiting for someone to comment :D

Compared to the Sun and Star, the bloody Beano is mature LOL

Franz Beckenbauer starts with the pre-match build up

"Stupidly, the English have slipped up a little by finishing second in their group," said German great Beckenbauer.

"The English look a little tired... they are burnt out. We respect them but we certainly don't fear them."

Franz isn't doing much to make England like him is he? LOL

Personally I love Germany. I've never been there but I intend to. Their football team is pretty entertaining too, completely not the cliched 'efficient' side we love to portray.

If we lose, I'd rather it was to Germany or Argentina than say, Ghana or Spain.

Should be a good'un. Better than the Valencia GP anyway
