Sharing the Podium

This is a project for our members with massive spreadsheets. But until then I have undertaken it the old fashioned way. I hope you guys find this interesting and I urge you to post your own findings here as well.

After recently looking through a bunch of podium photos I became interested in who had stood on the rostrum together the most times. Obviously I could never sort this whole thing out with pen and paper, but you can do it for individual drivers. And since I had this data right in front of me I had to start here. Who has stood on the podium with Hamilton most often?

I'm pretty sure I included the actual benchmark in addition to the Hamilton figures as well.

Prost and Senna's 41 shared podiums must be the highest. Only time (or a spreadsheet) will tell.

And like I said, you are more than welcome to sort it out for your favorite driver as well. I'll probably get around to Fernando later today. Kimi and Schumi are probably over 22 with him but we'll see.

Interesting to note that 9 out of 10 times Hamilton shared a podium with Button it was as team mates.

Also, this year has pretty much trebled the number of times Hamilton and Rosberg have shared a bottle or two.

I suspect Schumacher's sharing the podium will be with either Hakkinen who was the only rival he respected who has 51 career podiums

Hakkinen's podiums without MSC
1993 JPN 3rd
1994 GB 3rd
1994 POR 3rd
1994 ITA 3rd
1995 ITA 2nd
1996 GB 3rd
1997 EUR 1st
1998 AUS 1st
1998 MON 1st
1998 JPN 1st
1998 GER 1st
1999 CAN 1st
1999 FRA 2nd
1999 AUT 3rd
1999 HUN 1st
1999 BEL 2nd
2000 FRA 2nd
2000 AUT 1st
2000 GER 2nd

= 19 podiums which means he shared 32 times with MSC

Barrichello - 68 career podiums

podiums he did not finish with MSC on the podium

1995 CAN 2nd
1999 EUR 3rd
1999 FRA 3rd
2000 MON 2nd
2000 AUT 3rd
2000 FRA 3rd
2000 GER 1st
2001 ITA 2nd
2001 GER 2nd
2001 SMR 3rd
2003 GBR 1st
2003 JPN 1st
2003 EUR 3rd
2003 MAL 2nd
2004 MON 3rd
2004 CHN 1st
2004 Bra 2nd
2005 AUS 2nd
2005 Eur 3rd
2008 GB 3rd
2009 Valencia 1st
2009 ITA 1st
2009 AUS 2nd
2009 Spain 2nd
2009 MON 2nd
2009 GB 3rd

= 26 podiums so that is 42 times he shared with Schumacher

DC has 62 career podiums but I don't think he will beat Rubens

And officially they NEVER have c_a_t! (been on the podium w/o being teammates)

I just calculated Alonso's podium partners. Him and Kimi sure did some damage for a few years.

Times shared with Fernando

34 - Kimi Raikkonen
26 - Seb Vettel
22 - Lewis Hamilton
20 - Felipe Massa
17 - Michael Schumacher
17 - Mark Webber
16 - Jenson Button
8 - Giancarlo Fisichella
8 - JP Montoya
7 - Rubens Barrichello
4 - Nico Rosberg
3 - Jarno Trulli
2 - Nick Heidfeld
2 - Ralf Schumacher
2 - Sergio Perez

Alexander Wurz, David Coulthard, Robert Kubica, Timo Glock, Pastor Maldonado, Danny Ricciardo = 1

How do you count the times where a driver was subsequently disqualified from the race? Ricciardo stood on the podium in Oz but in the official records he was excluded.

My initial reaction was that it must be Schubens.

There are only 19 drivers with 41 or more podiums; we can safely discount those with less than 50, which leaves us with 14.

Schumacher
Prost
Alonso
Senna
Raikkonen
Hamilton
Barrichello
Vettel
Coulthard
Piquet
Mansell
Lauda
Hakkinen
Button

To beat Schubens, they need to be contemporaries who were at the top at the same time.

Therefore, I would imagine that the ones that really need checking are Schulthard, Proquet, Pransell and Alottel.

In that case it's going to cause you a few headaches to make sure you stay accurate, especially if you develop the thread into the period before the eighties... there were drivers who were disqualified before the podium ceremony, after it, but there were plenty of drivers who were neither disqualified nor investigated but simply did not go onto the podium for whatever reason. Before the eighties it wasn't uncommon to see a vacant spot on the podium.

I'm putting Schumacher and Rubens, or Schubens, at 41 Shared Podiums right now. Maybe I've missed one?

Barrichello and Schumacher's 41 shared podiums couldn't have been much different from Senna and Prost's. 38 of 41 Schuben Podiums were as teammates while just 15 of 41 Alain and Ayrton's were as teammates.

There was me thinking we were interested in F1 for the excitement and the skill, not producing spread sheets and statistics, all of which can be biased to produce the greatest ever, while the rest nod offLOL

I am surprised that Senna and Prost only shared the podiums as teammates 15 times given they were so utterly dominant in 1988 and 1989 taking 25 wins from 32 between them

"only" 15 times.. blimey, I think most team principals would give their right arm to see their two drivers on the podium 15 times out of a possible 32!

Here is the complete list of Podiums shared by Prost and Senna

1984 Monaco
1984 Portugal
1985 Austria
1985 Netherlands
1985 Italy
1985 Belgium

Whoever appeared on the actual podium is being used. Belgium 2008 and Australia 2009 being examples as well.

Actually in both cases correct drivers appeared on the podium. In Australia 2009 Hamilton was promoted 3rd but later disqualified and Trulli (who finished 3rd) got his place back.

In Belgium 2008 all three who appeared on podium were there in the final results - in different order.

So in their several hundred starts together, JB and Alonso have only shared the Podium 16 times, with one of them being the victor on just 6 occasions.

Shared Podiums
04 Germany
05 Germany (Alonso Win)
05 Belgium
06 Malaysia
06 Brazil

10 Italy (Alonso Win)
11 Monaco
11 Hungary (Button Win)
11 Italy
11 Japan (Button Win)
11 India

12 Brazil (Button Win)
