Head To Head Jenson Button vs Lewis Hamilton

I strongly suspect Hamilton's departure was due more to inner relationships within the team that had nothing to do with Button. It's always had it's stormy elements way before Jenson and sometimes there needs to be a break and need to move on to pastures new.

If Button is that clever that he was able to bring about the McLaren/Hamilton downfall then the boy is in the wrong job (or he's got a promising career post F1).

The over arching tenet of Straw's article is that Lewis is a single quali' lap merchant and that Jenson is as quick if not quicker on race pace. He cites a tenth and a half difference in quali lap time, 73.5% qualifying advantage to Lewis and an advantage of only five points in race-day results.

The current 2012 standings in the WDC are Lewis 165, Jenson 141. We should take into account Lewis being taken out in Spa and the appalling reliability and mechanical woes encountered since Singapore. Jenson may be top dog at Mclaren but realistically and rationally he isn't a match for Lewis.

We need also to remember that Lewis is not a quali merchant like a Trully or even a Vettel, he is fundamentally a racer, and came to F1 with a t best an average qualifying record. Lewis was undone in 2011 by his own racer instincts and a Felipe Massa determined to be unyielding. It is worth noting that the type of door slamming used in 2011 is deemed illegal in 2012. Without those incurred DNFs the points difference between Lewis and Jenson would have been reversed.

And your opinion seems very simplistic to me, but it is yours and rightly so.

That was intended to your previous post.

Bill Boddy. I have no idea to which post you refer as there are none where I attempt to explain the intricacies of how I reach my opinion. I am sure I could write a book on the development and collapse of the relationship between the two McLaren drivers, but I am not prepared to do that. In time, I am sure somebody else will and you will be able to buy it in WHSmiths or other good book stores.

An odd claim to make.

an advantage of only five points in race-day results.
I've seen this bandied about several times now.

Yes it may only have been 5 points a race ago but if anyone truly believes that 2011 was indicative of Hamilton's true performance, then the only person they are fooling is themself.
Yes he was beaten and had a dire season, but mental health issues will do that to a person.

I would suggest that 2010 and 2012 are more akin to the kind of performance and results one would normally expect.

Some people get so bogged down with statistics and record books that they cannot see the wood through the trees. These are the same people that make ridiculously short-sighted decisions in business. No true visionary ever did everything by the numbers.

Ironically I think you have pin pointed the underlying problem with Team Vodafone McLaren Mercedes.

They are ruled by numbers and a lack vision.

I posted a while ago somewhere (can't find it) that what I thought McLaren were missing was a visionary. A visionary will take a risk based on their own perception and confidence of a situation an action and the resulting outcome. they will do this against conventional thinking.

Generally these people have somewhat healthy narcissistic traits but lets not open that can of worms again. Tee hee.

Some examples: Albert Einstein, Henry Ford, Bernie Ecclestone, Tony Blair and many more. These are all people that one either loves or hates. Generally because you one might find it hard to escalate to the individuals level of rationalisation, which tends to require a touch of genius not present in most.

Sorry to go off topic but ExtremeNinja but you really must remove Tony Blair especially with reference to 'healthy', 'genius' and 'visionary'

I must do nothing. I have no intention of starting a political debate nor altering my opinions on the demand of others. Whether you liked Tony Blair's vision or not, he was a visionary.
