Grand Prix 2025 Chinese Grand Prix

We are underway in 2025, and the circus pops across the Philippine Sea to Shanghai for round 2 at the Shanghai International circuit. I say "popped", it's over a 10 hour flight which is the same as flying from London to Florida.

What did we learn in Melbourne? McLaren appear to have the fastest car and Norris and Piastri look very evenly matched. Max is out performing his car, whilst Liam Lawson appears to have been promoted beyond his capabilities, certainly at this stage of his career. Mercedes are certainly in the hunt for podium places, but will need things to go their way if they are to win races. Williams, , astonishingly, are also looking like they have a combinations of car and drivers which could make top 5, at least.

Ferrari have started the year as they mean to continue, with strategy calls which are mind boggling. Add to this the seemingly incessant need to coach their drivers, particularly "rookie" Lewis Hamilton, you expect that they are very much in for an uphill battle to win races, let alone threaten any of the Championships. Toro Rosso, or Racing Bulls, or RB, or whatever they are this year (can we not have just stuck with Minardi?) have a competitive car and, in Yuki Tsunoda, at least, a competitive driver. It's very hard to judge Hadjar given he didn't even make it round the parade lap.

Talking of things we learned, it would appear that when Dr Helmut Marko was reading the book on motivating young talent, and got to the about about using either carrot or the stick, he had his thumb of the word carrot. I think we all knew he is not a very subtle man, but his comments about young Isack were totally unnecessary.

Of the other teams, although Sauber and Aston Martin both scored points in Australia, they don't look very impressive. We appear to have a four way fight for the wooden spoon this year as Hass and Alpine also look very underwhelming.

One thing to note, in advance of this race, is that the FIA are "clamping down" on so called flexi wings and will introduce a new test in Shanghai. Perhaps it might have been a good idea to have shared this concern with the teams prior to the start of the season rather than when they are half way across the world from their factories where making design changes is a bit of a challenge. Ho hum, when have the FIA ever been consistent?

For those with Sky, its another journey in to the wee hours if you want to watch the one practice session the teams are allowed or the worthless sprint race. Otherwise it will be like getting up for work for many of us with a 7:00 a.m. kick off on Sunday. The weather forecast is for it to be dry, sunny, and warm. Perhaps Melbourne proved that dear old Bernie was right, we need to introduce sprinklers at random times during the race to spice up the action.

ferrari might as well have been leaving shanghai Saturday afternoon. because they had a brilliant car changed the set up & it went awful. went from 2nd best to 4th best car. judging by the sprint made the tyre problems even worse
Already a mountain to climb to win the constructors but they now know that going the direction after sprint was a blind alley

Leclerc probably would have been further down if the broken wing did not give him extra downforce

Interesting Mercedes under Russell are quicker than I pected

I listened to the majority of the race on 5-Live while walking the dog this morning and doing a few bits around the house.

They must have been playing buzz word bingo in the commentary because all the cliches were out in force. One of the ones I particularly hate being "X is gaining on Y by 1 second a lap and will soon be right behind him. Of course catching is one thing but overtaking is something else"

Oh do sod off !!!!

Also, I had to laugh when I think it was Stroll's pitstop was described as a bit of a slow one at 3.2 seconds.

30 years ago that would just about get you the wheels off the car.

Taking FB's point about Piastri and in the week where we lost Eddie Jordan, I'm not sure if Oscar has an ASD or not but I do know that F1 stopped being "fun" a long time ago. Even the bits that are supposed to be amusing in pre-race film clips seem so tightly controlled they may as well have a canned laughter track.

Remember when the teams had a raft race in Montreal for example? I'd even welcome back the Shoe. At least it was something quirky.

If it aint for Ferrari's abysmal showing in the race then now doubt which team would come under the spotlight again

The other stories to note

Haas - where on earth did they find the pace in the car it looks like top of the midfield as Ocon really was impressive and Bearman managed to make up 7 places

Williams - Albon has upped his game whilst Sainz is still getting use to the car

Racing Bulls - another fluffed strategy

Alpine - oh dear - seriously did not expect them this bad

Sauber - Well they are where they are

Aston Martin - look who is the lead driver and who is at the bottom of the championship !

heres a question. as copped a bit of heat for a mid race social media post. where may have upset the lando fan club. do you agree Oscar won that comfortably or are you of the point that Lando with a healthy car overtakes piastri in the final stint

i will support all the british drivers. always have. but im not going to blindly toe the party line. & i dont see where this theory few suggesting "lando wins without brake problem". im pretty sure Oscar had alot more pace in hand to cover off any late surge.

We've not seen the Mclarens race flat out because the drivers are being told to hold station clearly when 1-2 is on the cards. I don't Norris would have fun because he was always one mistake away from losing momentum
