Never mind Herbert, where's the defending champion?! :(
A lack of funds it would seem :disappointed:

Colin Turkington has become the latest motorsport victim of the economic recession.

The Portadown driver was the first Northern Ireland winner of the prestigious British Touring Car Championship title last year, but he will not be back to defend his crown.

With the start the new season just two weeks away he has admitted defeat in the hunt for funding for his 2010 campaign.

“We have contacted close to 80 companies since Christmas, but haven’t been able to secure anything like the funding required for this season despite the high profile of the BTCC and the 100-plus hours of television coverage the series receives,” said Turkington.

A terrible shame to have talented drivers like Colin, James Thompson and Giovanardi on the sidelines.

I suppose BMW would have looked at him had they not been downscaling their WTCC squad. Just bad timing all round.

Indeed.

I expect most teams thought Colin would have no problems securing sponsorship to defend his title otherwise some of them might have been interested before they finalised their line-ups?

I suppose it's never too late. He did drive for Triple 8 before of course, when they were the works Vauxhall team, and they've apparently not signed any drivers yet, so there's always a chance, but I'm sure with the loss of the factory backing they'll be looking for funded drivers too.

Well Gio coming back this season was a bit of a surprise.

It's only for 1 race though unless the sponsors are prepared to invest more.
After yesterday's showing if that doesn't convince them then nothing will.

I see Matt Neal was heavily criticised and labelled an amateur driver after his usual ramming tactics.
