Bahrain GP Debate

So it's finally off.

Bahrain Circuit statement just out. "In the best interest of the sport, we will not pursue the rescheduling of a race this season."

Great. So now I have to update everything.
Again.

Hokey Cokey

Learn something new every day. I had thought Hokey Pokey was universal. :D

Seriously though, I hope F1 never returns to Bahrain after this debacle. Just because the calendar turns to 2012 doesn't mean the same injustices will not be occurring. There are plenty of places much better suited to host a GP for next year's already packed schedule.

Full marks to those who objected most strenuously on this site and elsewhere about allowing Bahrain the honor to host a Formula One Grand Prix. Your voice, and others like it, have certainly struck a chord within the halls of power from the British Isles to the Middle East.

In the light of ongoing difficulties relating to the rescheduling of the Bahrain Grand Prix, Bahrain International Circuit chairman Zayed R Alzayani, today made the following statement:

“Whilst Bahrain would have been delighted to see the Grand Prix progress on October 30th in-line with the World Motor Sport Council’s decision, it has been made clear that this fixture cannot progress and we fully respect that decision.

“Bahrain has always sought to play a positive role in the continued development of Formula One, from pioneering F1 racing in the Middle East, to helping other countries in facilitating their own races in new territories, as well as providing our own unique experience and universal welcome to Grand Prix supporters.

“Bahrain has absolutely no desire to see a race which would further extends the calendar season detract from the enjoyment of F1 for either drivers, teams or supporters. We want our role in Formula One to continue to be as positive and constructive as it has always been, therefore, in the best interest of the sport, we will not pursue the rescheduling of a race this season.

“We look forward to welcoming teams, their drivers and supporters back to Bahrain next year and would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our supporters, including staff, volunteers, sponsors, private businesses and the general public, for whom I know this year’s decision will be a disappointment. We would also especially like to thank the FIA, FOM, The Bahrain Motor Federation (BMF) and the teams for all support and understanding they have extended to us at this time.

Interesting fact - was originally the Hokey Cokey but was changed in the U.S due the name of a certain brand of fizzy drink. We in the UK obviously don't care about infringing on copyrights.

horaah for the Bahrain GP being called off - its just a shame its being presented as being called off due to some FIA reg and not the whole F1 world standing up and saying NO.

Can someone tell why Mr Mansell has come out today and given his support to the 2012 Bahrain GP going ahead? big wad of cash? maybe he doesn't watch the news? seems really odd timing.

I think the Fizzy Drinks company had a little bit more backing than a traditional kids dance so they won - I mean they also managed to change what colour suit Santa wore to fit their brand and made Ray Davies of the Kinks fly all the way from GB to America to change one word in their song 'Lola' or were going to stop it being released. So its fair to say they have a bit of clout.

We're getting dangerously off topic though.

boo to bahrain!

that should sort it.

Yeah! :p

Actually, now that the Bahrain race organisers have finally called off their quest to hold the race this year, does that mean they now owe Bernie the severance fee rather than the other way round? Or was it really Bernie who effectively cancelled it with his last statement?

"F1 is IF spelt backwards.......no its not Murry its 1F!"
It's Murray btw ;)

How have I not seen that before? epic fail - do I get points taken off my CTA total for that?

If I know Bernie he'll find a way they have to pay him.

I do have the ability to manually edit points totals - perhaps I can reserve that as a punishment :D

I suspect the lawyers on both sides will be feverishly trying to work out who owes what to whom.

I really don't know what to say about this...

Astonishing revelation by the FIA that Bernie made a last-ditch attempt yesterday to stage the Bahrain GP on December 4.

After everything that has happened and been said, he still tried to get it on the calendar?
It really is time he stepped down now.

I have to disagree Bro... Bernie has a long history of responding to difficult questions with questions of his own and feigning ignorance. I think he was right to explore all the options. You sometimes have to figure out what a solution might be before you decide is what is right

I'm sure the Dec deal would have included some sort of compensation for the teams to make up for all those lost holidays, so the decison probably went along the lines of, wow, they must be serious because money is not talking...

Hmm... The FIA are now treating us like idiots...

They have released a "chronology of events" and an explanation of why they were perfectly in the right to re-instate...

Now, they claim:
" Article 198 of the International Sporting Code is clearly inapplicable. Article 198 states "Any event withdrawn from the calendar once it has been published will lose its international status for the year in question."
Firstly, the Bahrain Grand Prix was not withdrawn from the calendar, it was merely postponed pending reconsideration at a later date. Secondly, and more importantly, Article 198 conflicts with Article 5.5 and 5.6 of the F1 Sporting Regulations and is, therefore, not applicable to the FIA Formula One World Championship."

Now, this got me thinking... What are articles 5.5 and 5.6? Well, here we go:

5.5 The final list of Events is published by the FIA before 1 January each year.
5.6 An Event which is cancelled with less than three months written notice to the FIA will not be considered for inclusion in the following year's Championship unless the FIA judges the cancellation to have been due to force majeure.
