2016-17 Silly Season. Drivers Market

RasputinLives Drivers from slums well there is Hamilton and Mansell who had fight against adversities to get into F1

Incidentally I thought GP2 is supposedly the junior category that shapes up drivers to prepare for F1

With Red Bull / Marko u-turning on Gasly to Toro Rosso and Giovinazzi does not appear to have a drive into F1 either it looks like no graduation from series again

What do Renault really want ?

Neither Hamilton nor Mansell came from slums.

Hamilton's father had three jobs, one of which was as an IT Consultant; I have known IT Consultants who have been on over £100k per year.

Mansell mortgaged his house to finance his career, the fact that he had a house to mortgage shows that he had a reasonable amount of dosh.

Yes, both Anthony Hamilton and Nigel Mansell had to be dedicated and make enormous sacrifices but they did not start with nothing.

If you come from a slum, you'll likely be playing sports you can afford to play. Usually association football. You need a ball, two jumpers and zero karts.

teabagyokel

Hamilton was living in a council home and he should be playing football like you mentioned but he wanted to be a racing driver so his Dad had to do three jobs to help fund his career

Ashley Young the Man Utd winger use to go to the same school as him and played football with him and really did not like him and thought Lewis was a bit arrogant that he thought was going to be a racing driver because it was associated with being a rich people sport

yeah GP2 is becoming increasing pointless progression wise, because its a fantastic series often brings better racing than f1. because its very rare they progress as look as last 4 years
next yr/ Now
2012 -Valsecchi - Lotus 3rd Driver /SKY Italia commentator
2013 - Leimer - WEC/ Manor 3rd Driver??
2014 - Palmer - Renault 3rd Driver / Renault Driver (for now)
2015 - Vandoorne - Super Formula

Il_leone - I'll grant he wasn't a millionaire, but I think Hertfordshire County Council would bristle at the description of 'slum'.

The 'poor' amongst F1 drivers are probably all middle class at worst, and Anthony Hamilton had to work insanely hard to even make that work.

Hamilton's childhood was poor in comparison to other F1 drivers, yes. But there's not ever been an F1 driver who was from a favela or a township, and there never will be.

teabagyokel Lewis Hamilton was definitely working class given it was a council home his family was living in and had he not made it as a racing driver he would have been a footballer

Stevenage is not what I call one of the more affluent parts of Hertfordshire

As for someone coming from a favela or township that won't happen unless you come from some part of the world where no F1 driver has been from ie Africa because most countries that host GPs and where drivers come from are developed much further than that so anyone know someone from the slum of Slough that wants to be an F1 driver then?

The real deal

He had to quit his job as an IT manager to become a contractor and work 2-3 jobs in order to manage and fund Lewis career don't see how you can call that middle class

Lewis went to a voluntary aided Secondary school not a private school when he was younger

Il_leone

Can i suggest that before you denigrate the populations of britains urban centres, and pass off stevenage and sloughas slums, that you look up the definition. Then look at Sao Paolo, Johannesburg wtc. Nowhere in modern Britain, however neglected can compare to slums.

And i am not sure what the outdated notion of class has to do with anything. Anthony did what most good parents would do, that is, whatever it took to provide for his family.

The Pits Slough was known as the worst slum in the UK and it is actually just a flyover bridge away from Windsor ..both within Berkshire usually bracketed as Windsor, Slough and Eton although those from Windsor and Eton don't really want to associate with Slough

I don't want to dwell on the Hamilton story any further as when he was karting he was up against the rich kids or lets say those who thought they were superior to him because of his background upbringing

Slough house prices

Terraced properties sold for an average price of £325,351, while semi-detached properties fetched £390,629. Slough, with an overall average price of £309,681, was similar in terms of sold prices to nearby Cippenham (£295,872), but was cheaper than Wexham (£396,344) and Eton (£450,500).3 days ago

Stevenage

The majority of sales in Stevenage during the last year were terraced properties, selling for an average price of £253,515. Flats sold for an average of £166,763, with semi-detached properties fetching £303,808.

until recently my brother lived in Stevenage, certainly not in a slum, but he is also not very good at driving.

I guess your definition of slum is relative.

gethinceri I agree, although if Lewis was the son of a miner from Merthyr, I doubt we would be having this discussion

The Pits most people can't afford houses these days and Slough prices are considered one of the cheaper areas of Berkshire area

I've worked in Slough when it was a slum hence the influence behind the series the Office the TV series

We're talking about back then and not now when Hamilton was living in Stevenage ..it was still a slum in comparison to today

I'm laughing so hard at your immense middle classness right not Il_leone. Never really experienced life much north of London have you?

Slough a slum! lol. A dump but not a slum. Take a drive to Port Talbot or Rhyl one day. not even they are slums.

That depends on where a person wants to live but most people seem to be looking at places that are highly populated and therefore come with a corresponding price- tag to supply and demand. We are witnessing an ever increasing urbanisation and as a result increasing house prices in densely populated areas.
In other countries it is not common to buy a house, for example, Germany and France most Germans and French rent their accommodation.

RasputinLives, in the following I am referring to your response to my post.

I agree and even Rosberg and Hamilton share set- up data.
I do not know if the Senna reference was also directed at my post but Stroll unlike other drivers has had advantages such as his own simulator for F3, his father investing in wind- tunnel time and engine perfomance improvements. I do not think any other driver has had the capabilities to invest in such areas. Though, I am aware that Formula One/ Motor racing is a sport of the more affluent people, it always has been and always will be.

Rutherford

Construction industry is one of the fastest growing sectors and there is a constant building of new homes but the prices tend to be pushed up higher.. they only took a dip when the financial crisis 2007-08 began to bite.

On your post about Stroll ... if its true then I can't remember a driver whose father had so much influence on a team. Not since Andrea De Cesaris who was touted as a promising youngster but it is believed he was backed by Marlboro because apprently his Dad was in a senior position at the time which made Mclaren hire him the first time but his results did not back it up

@Rasputin
Nobody likes to class themselves as "Upper class" openly these days
