Grand Prix 2012 Australian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Gentleman, start your engines

Despite it feeling only a few weeks since the season ending Brazilian Grand Prix last November the Australian Grand Prix is coming very quickly into view to start of a season which hopefully promises to be a lot closer than the 2011 season where Sebastian Vettel ran away with the Championship and had it virtually won by mid season.

Looking at testing and it is virtually impossible to see who is in the best shape going into the season opener apart from that Mclaren and Red Bull are the two teams in the best shape which really isn't surprising but the big surprise is the continual lack of pace from Ferrari despite a radical new car (the issues I commented on on a previous thread).

As for the midfield it is anyone's guess as all the midfield have all been up and down the testing rankings throughout the winter and it'll only be qualifying where we see a true reflection of where the grid is in terms of reliability. Without a doubt Lotus have had the most work to do after they had to make a major chassis change involving suspension mounts which meant abandoning one of the test sessions but that doesn't seem to have had a major effect on the team and with Kimi Raikkonen at the wheel it is hoped that they can challenge Mercedes after a fairly disappointing 2011 after a strong start.

Once again HRT are the joke of the entire grid as they once again go into the first race of the season without having so much as turned the wheel before after crash test problems earlier this year and it will be a miracle if they actually qualify as they failed to do so in Melbourne in 2011, but they could be joined by Marussia who have also had problems with their new car and have had to test with a modified 2011 car recently and they will also be struggling to even qualify for Melbourne which isn't good news for the team unless they can pull a rabbit out of the hat with the new car.

This seasons cars (apart from Mclaren) are characterised by the distinctive stepped nose due to new regulations about front wing height and this is how the vast majority of teams have interpreted this rule and it seems that only Mclaren are running a 'smooth' nose and it remains to be seen whether this was a correct decision and one that can mean they can challenge for the title after an average 2011 (unless you're Button of course)

For the British viewers 2012 is going to be a completely different viewing experience as Formula One is going to be broadcast on satellite television for the first time. When it was announced that Sky would be broadcasting F1 with BBC showing only half of the races (live) it was met with uproar from all quarters but as more details have been announced, many fans (me included) are rather looking forward to the full F1 package that is being provided this season with the F1 channel being launched in a matter of days!

Just got woken up by an earthquake here guys. Quite shallow, don't even know how close it was to New Plymouth but talkback radios pretty full on with reports. Probably nothing much I hope. Be back tomorrow if my house doesn't fall over. ROFL

It was a 4.7 magnitude 30km west of Whanganui.
for Keewee's benefit there's this http://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/quakes/latest.html (they ask you to please report what you felt)

As for the rest of us, Melbourne is so far away that we needn't worry about the race tomorrow in any way.

Great start to the season. Well done to McLaren, best start for a while and Lewis shows us what is possible. I think the q3 times flatter Button as Lewis could clearly have gone a lot faster. As long as the team don't mess up Lewis' race with iffy strategy or slow pitstops we should see a real race between the teammates. Button from second will have a chance to show if he can trump the speed advantage Lewis clearly has.
Seb has a chance to be in the same position Lewis was in last year and reward those who deified him last season by winning the race without making a mistake
I think Kimi could be one to watch along with MS and Rosberg, Grosjean inexperience withstanding could be the joker in the pack

As for Alonso, I think we are going to get the confirmation that a top driver in a slow car who needs to push will make the type of mistakes Lewis was vilified for, as for Massa, no comment

I don't think that is a fair statement to make that Ferrari is obviously crap and last years McLaren was a good car it was just the the Red Bull was better

Elsewhere I predicted 18 or 19 finishers based on 24 starters and the usual attrition rate at Melbourne of which "bumper car dances" are one component.
With already two out before the kick-off I wonder if that was optimistic!
Still, should be a dry race which should help some of the less sticky ones to stay on the track.
Perhaps the weight of a full tank will help Alonso to stay on the black!

...and of course, as everyone knows, Lewis is particularly kind to his tyres, unlike ZIppy Button who shreds his every time!LOL

I did say in an earlier post, the best way for Lewis to save his tyres would be to open a gap and ease off a little, intentionally not pushing to save tyres. The most important thing for Lewis is to stay ahead of Jenson into and after turn 1, just to keep first call on tyres.

I can't see us having the same DNF rate as last year, now they've got rid of some of the things aiding the drivers. Safety car is highly likely, which throws up an important variable in tyre choice, now that backmarkers are released. If Alonso picks the harder tyre, makes up a few place, then we get a safety car, he could be in a great position with everyone else needing to take the hard tyre, though the gap between them is very small now.

The FIA overreacting to the stepped nose could kill this season stone dead. Who is going to spend the usual vast fortunes getting their cars to the front if they are developing redundant technology?
Are people seriously suggesting it is the shape of the nose alone that makes the car faster or slower WOW watch HRT gooooo

I agree. It has been pointed out by "the experts" that, that particular area is not one where a vast of amount of time is lost or found. I think people are looking at it simply because Mclaren don't seem to have a lot else obviously different from the norm.

How was Hamilton 'clearly faster'?

I doubt that Alonso will make as many mistakes, and if he does it will be to his own detriment, no-one elses.

Lewis didnt need to do a final run, he aborted as he was still fastest from his first run, so he should have better tyres to start with.

Only one driver has ever retired due to a collision with lewis, in Lewis' whole F1 carreer and its dubious whose fault that crash was. If Alonso has a similar record he'll do well.

I just watched qually, it was pretty epic. Really impressed by Grosjean and Mclaren and I feel sorry for Felipe tbh.

It will be a pretty interesting race tomorrow as the midfield is pretty tight and Alonso, Felipe and Kimi starting near the end of the grid. Can't wait :D

With the Lotus clearly being competitive this year and Kimi having new tyres for the race, I'm hoping for an impressive fight back through the field by him tomorrow.

I reckon Lewis will build up a gap but then Button will keep his tyres better, so it depends how much of a gap Lewis has. Ultimately, if he can look after his tyres he should win.

Lewis during the post race interview with James Allen, and regarding what would be the key to winning the race tomorrow said, " obviousy looking after tires alway's is.....as it always is. "

I believe that it's a little bit overdone, that Lewis has a big problem, and is poor regarding his tire management.

He'll start on the tyres that he used to set his fastest lep so should be pretty level playing field.

Anyone heard whether Mercedes have requested to change Rosberg's flatspotted tyre?
