Grand Prix 2012 Australian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Gentleman, start your engines

Despite it feeling only a few weeks since the season ending Brazilian Grand Prix last November the Australian Grand Prix is coming very quickly into view to start of a season which hopefully promises to be a lot closer than the 2011 season where Sebastian Vettel ran away with the Championship and had it virtually won by mid season.

Looking at testing and it is virtually impossible to see who is in the best shape going into the season opener apart from that Mclaren and Red Bull are the two teams in the best shape which really isn't surprising but the big surprise is the continual lack of pace from Ferrari despite a radical new car (the issues I commented on on a previous thread).

As for the midfield it is anyone's guess as all the midfield have all been up and down the testing rankings throughout the winter and it'll only be qualifying where we see a true reflection of where the grid is in terms of reliability. Without a doubt Lotus have had the most work to do after they had to make a major chassis change involving suspension mounts which meant abandoning one of the test sessions but that doesn't seem to have had a major effect on the team and with Kimi Raikkonen at the wheel it is hoped that they can challenge Mercedes after a fairly disappointing 2011 after a strong start.

Once again HRT are the joke of the entire grid as they once again go into the first race of the season without having so much as turned the wheel before after crash test problems earlier this year and it will be a miracle if they actually qualify as they failed to do so in Melbourne in 2011, but they could be joined by Marussia who have also had problems with their new car and have had to test with a modified 2011 car recently and they will also be struggling to even qualify for Melbourne which isn't good news for the team unless they can pull a rabbit out of the hat with the new car.

This seasons cars (apart from Mclaren) are characterised by the distinctive stepped nose due to new regulations about front wing height and this is how the vast majority of teams have interpreted this rule and it seems that only Mclaren are running a 'smooth' nose and it remains to be seen whether this was a correct decision and one that can mean they can challenge for the title after an average 2011 (unless you're Button of course)

For the British viewers 2012 is going to be a completely different viewing experience as Formula One is going to be broadcast on satellite television for the first time. When it was announced that Sky would be broadcasting F1 with BBC showing only half of the races (live) it was met with uproar from all quarters but as more details have been announced, many fans (me included) are rather looking forward to the full F1 package that is being provided this season with the F1 channel being launched in a matter of days!

Only one driver has ever retired due to a collision with lewis, in Lewis' whole F1 carreer and its dubious whose fault that crash was. If Alonso has a similar record he'll do well.
I don't want to get into this but that statement is wrong, Massa and Maldonado Monaco just to start with. all drivers have collisions and the stewards decide who is to blame all the rest is conjecture and that subject has been conjectured to death.

Anyway this is a qualifying and race thread for the upcoming race not a what happened in the past thread.

Anyone else concerned with Grosjean?

His lack of experience at the sharp end of the grid could easily see him going in too hot at the first corner and taking one or both of the McLarens out.

Always a worry, but hopefully will make a clean start. IMO, he needs to concentrate on who's behind him.

Probably more like he'll be too deferential /overawed /concentrating /whatever and lose places, as The Hulk did from pole at Interlagos 2010.
Both Mac drivers are too experienced at starts not to leave a rookie behind and are more likely to jostle each other in Turn 1 by arriving there together!

It's harder to go through the first turn in the midfield as JB will testify. He has been at the front of GP2 for a while too.

Also crashes as at the front always make racing interesting as everyone is all over the show avoiding everyone else.

If Schumacher continues with his incredible starts he had last season then the Mclarens should be more worried about him, he could be leading by the end of lap one! (though I cant see him winning, those Mclarens looked just too fast). Podium might be a possibility, if the Merc doesn’t eat its tyres that is.

What I want to see from Lewis tomorrow is a recognition of his own pace that he doesn't have to push as hard as Jenson and can save tyres that way. Just pull a small gap and then ease off a little to save tyres. Gap Jenson, I hate to say it, like Vettel did last year.

Do you mean like the way that Lewis gapped Jenson, during the penultimate race at Abub Dahbi last season?

Massa took himself out in the tunnel at Monaco, Maldonado is the person I was refering to, but like you said this is a new year and sadly for Massa he's way out of it this year. So excited about tomorrow! So many questions to be answered. Will Kimi get into it? Will Schumacher get a podium? How will Gorsjean cope at the sharp end. What will Vettel be like not starting from pole? Will Alonso be able to do anything with that Ferrari? I darent even think about will Lewis keep in front?? Bring it on!!

Let's not open another Hamilton debacle.

I'm expecting Rosberg to be a threat to the Red Bulls at the start of the race with the straight line speed that the Mercedes posses.

I suspect your right. Rosberg has a 10kph advantage over the Red Bulls in a straight line, the only teams slower in a straight line are Marussia and HRT. Hamilton was amongst the fastest cars in a line, second only to Perez by 2.7kph with Button being a further 3.3kph behind Hamilton which may make the difference should he be pressuring Hamilton. In addition to handling poorly and being generally sluggish the F2012 is also slow in a straight line, only just in front of Red Bull, Alonso's probably in for a tough day tomorrow, yet we don't know the race pace of the cars and much like last year the F2012 may yet offer much tougher competition in race trim.

I wonder what happend to Kobayashi. He was P1 in Q1 and had he done the same lap time in later on he would have made it into Q3. Rosberg also should have been higher, that flat spot on his only set of new tyres cost him dearly.

Stars of the day for me were Hamilton, Grosjean and (surprisingly so) Maldonado.

I mean more like the way he gapped Alonso at USGP 2007. That was a great drive. Abu Dhabi was more dominant was it not?
