In 2015 we are headed for the unprecedented situation where there are four former World Champions paired together in two different teams. And therefore there has never been 5 World Champions on the grid situated in just 3 teams. I thought it might be interesting to look at all the different former WDC we've had on the grid. I've only included the ones who did a full season. One-offs have been omitted.

So here are all the past Champions and the various partnerships

There's a lot to take away from this list, but the biggest one is just how extraordinarily rare it is to pair World Champions together. This is the entire lot

1953 - Ascari and Farina
1967 - Hill and Clark
1974 - Fittipaldi and Hulme
1986 - Prost and Rosberg
1989 - Prost and Senna
2010,11,12 - Button and Hamilton
2014 - Alonso and Raikkonen

***2015 - Alonso and Button, Vettel and Raikkonen

Jenson and Lewis are the only duo to last more than a single season. McLaren will add their 5th WDC Combo to the list next year, which will give them 5 of the 9 Champion Pairings throughout history.

To my mind the fact we have been seeing more world champions on the grid in the past few years is also a logical result of seeing drivers enter F1 at a much younger age on average. That trend started about a dozen year ago and we are now seeing the rersults of this. 25 is almost too late these days, whereas it used to be an average age to enter F1. Careers among those who make it are therefore getting longer than ever as well.
Graham Hill in his time was deemed to have had an exceptionally long F1 career for the standards of hs age. Today it would condidered the norm for top drivers.
