The 2011 cars

You know, this whole "pin the exhaust on the donkey" business would be so much simpler if some journalist would invest in some thermal imaging equipment. Probably a lot less fun without the blindfold though

Williams have today revealed the definitive 2011 livery.

Interestingly technical director Sam Michael assured us that Williams has not dropped the flywheel KERS use in F1, although they will most likely not run it this year due to packaging constraints, he did not rule out trying it out in the next. - Autosport.

McLaren's reliability issues appear to be directly related to their preferred exhaust configuration. According to Autosport the MP4-26's planned exhaust exit is down the centre of the diffuser. Unfortunately air to cool this area is at a premium, and having fried many parts and failed to improve reliability they opted, temporarily, for a less radical configuration. Hoping that Lewis could put some miles on the car on the last two days of Barcelona testing. This they succeeding in doing, whilst also showing off a patently slow and ill handling car.

The question is; how much of the MP4-26's other design features depend upon this treatment of the exhaust and diffuser?

As we speak, are they frantically redesigning the car to make the best of a bad job?

Or are they studiously plotting to resolve the crippling overheating that they clearly failed to foresee or plan for?

I read a quote somewhere from Hamilton commenting that he was pleased the season had been delayed so they could sort the car. Says it all really.

How could all of those highly paid engineers not foresee the problem with hot exhaust gasses exiting onto bodywork and other components?

It seems McLaren are badly in need of a new technical team as the current one seems unable to grasp some fundamental concepts.

Another poor season ahead then, just trying desperately to stay ahead of the mid-field.

I dunno Brogan, its a bit early to say that, we've seen seen teams before that have been no-where in testing and seem to find the warp speed button at the first race. Anyway isn't that what pre-season testing is for, finding teething problems and weeding them out??

Its probelry the case that 2 extra weeks break is more a helping hand rather then a necessity.

That is so uncomfortably close to the reality of last year it hurts.

I do wonder what their design team is up to sometimes. Have they lost all their highly experienced and senior engineers to rivals?

Has anyone noticed that the Williams livery is similar to the rothmans liverly in mid 90's??? (ok different colour). Quite heartened by the comments of Sam Micheal,.

Just hope Mclaren sort their problems out, how can a team with that as much resource as they do produce a car that does not deliver 2 seasons on the trot (potentially 3!).

Yeah, i think they are following Group Lotus / Renault's lead... It says as much in one of the Autosport articles i think. "...inspired by the successful 90s Rothmans sponsored Williams" or something like that.

McLaren MP4-26 - exhaust positioning

Formula1.com said:
Although McLaren haven't opted to use forward-facing exhausts, the team have come up with two different exhaust solutions at the back. One is very traditional (inset) and blows directly towards the rear of the car. The second is much more complex (main image) and features a U-bend pipe, with a bonded section on the side of the car's stepped bottom. This hides the flat and wide exhaust exit, which blows towards the starter hole in the centre of the rear diffuser.

McLaren saying they had a number of exhaust solutions they were considering was the grand total of two. The one from the first race last year and this years one.
