Team History

The Mercedes team history splits into two parts. In 1954 the famous pre-war Silver Arrows entered the F1 world championship and recorded a 1-2 at their first race. Fangio went on to win the drivers championship that year and again in 1955. Mercedes withdrew at the end of the 1955 season after the accident which killed 80 spectators at Le Mans which involved one of their cars.

The current team entered F1 in 2010 after Mercedes bought Brawn Grand Prix. Brawn Grand Prix, winners of the Drivers Championship, with Jenson Button, and the constructor’s championship in 2009, grew out of the ashes of Honda’s F1 entry after Honda had withdrawn from F1 at the end of the 2008 season after only a single Grand Prix win for Button in Hungary 2006.

Prior to the Honda takeover in 2006 the team had raced under the name of British America racing which had acquired the assets and race entry of the Tyrrell F1 team in 1999. BAR competed in 118 races without a single victory. The high points for the team were 2 pole positions (both for Button – San Marino 2004 and Canada 2005) and 2nd in the constructors championship in 2004.

Tyrrell were amongst the most successful private F1 teams taking part in 463 Grands Prix, scoring 33 victories and 3 Drivers Championships, all with Jackie Stewart.

2010

Having replaced Button and Barrichello with Nico Rosberg and 7 times WDC Michael Schumacher many expected great things of the new Mercedes team in 2010 but they had an indifferent season.

Rosberg managed 3 podiums for the team but Schumacher, coming back from retirement, struggled with the new cars, tyres and limited testing under the revised regulations. The team finished 4th in the Constructors Championship.

2011

For 2011 Mercedes retain the same driver line up and are hoping for better things from their MGP W02 chassis.

They can and will? Didn't Nico not join Mclaren because he didn't want to be paired with Lewis? I know they used to be buddy buddy but you don't see them paling around much now and I reckon Nico is gonna be peeved about this number 1 thing.

I didn't see anything to prove that point other than speculation re his father. Rosberg may be inwardly seething but outwardly he is composed and will remain proffessional and you don't need to be pally to have mutual respect. Look at how they both react when Nico gets a podium/win, it's genuine affection.

You might be be right @HHamberg

But a few years back I think you'd have said the same thing about Jenson. he's not been exactly known for slagging his rivals off and bad manner either. I think it all depends on how results go.

Personally? No i wouldnt. I've not hidden the fact I think he's a whingey arrogant tosser and have had that opinion for many years. Nowt to do with his driving ability of course.

I'll lay my cards on the table I don't think the men at Mercedes rate Rosberg as highly as Vettel or Hamilton its usually Ross BRawn who's praising Nico not Norbert Haug

Mercedes signed Lewis not be No 2 but because they believe he will deliver the title they crave for

Mercedes are usually a team that allows their drivers to race but you get the feeling insiders really want Hamilton to deliver

Mercedes problems with car seems to be they destroy tyres too quickly...great for 1 lap speed along with double DRS on the fast circuits

I seem to remember the days of Button and BAR/HOnda and Brawn the problem was always they could not get enough heat into the tyres or they take a while to warm up before being able to have consistent race pace

Hamberg I know you like both Lewis and Nico so how do you handle them being in the same team? I know my loyalties would be torn....

I think where they are battling each other Hamilton will edge it because he's British. Where they aren't I hope I'll be rooting for both but I guess time will tell how I'll react. I just hope this vs crap doesn't happen either in the media or on here.

This move at least has the potential to be another JV to Honda BAR or Emerson Fittipaldi to Copersucar mistake.
Leaving a proven championship-caliber team to pursue money and the possibilty of making a team into a contender is always fraught with risk.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I think its probably likely to be more of a Schumacher to Ferrari story than a Mansell to Mclaren story but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Of course it could be a Prost to Ferrari story and land squarely in the middle.
