Will be interesting to see how this thread develops next season when they are in different machinery. Sadly I think one of the cars won't be up to scratch and the battles will be few and far between.

F1Yorkshire no I don't think Lewis will be in a position to do battle with Button next year. Mercedes have a long way to go to put Lewis on a footing to do that. But it will be hugely interesting to see if he can steal the odd one, get in the mix sometimes. For me, it's not only about winning, it's about getting the most out of the machine, doing the best job you can, excelling. Lewis can still do all of that.

Nico found some good pace in qualy 3 (albeit rather fleetingly) and given that potential in the Merc I wouldn't be surprised if Lewis and Jenson are closer together next year than some people seem to expect. If Lewis can be more than a second a lap quicker than his team mate in equal machinery, maybe if he had been driving Rosberg's car today he would have been ahead of, or at least close to, Jenson on the grid.

Whilst it is true that a the Mercedes driver pops up and puts in a good qualification session there has only been once where that has resulted in a race win, and even that was a long time ago. The usual is a steady drop down the field, not unusually with one more tyre change than the front runners.

I'm going to predict the Lewis will beat Jenson in qualifying more next year but Jenson will score more points.
I think Lewis will be able to drag the car further up the grid than it perhaps should be but will fall behind in races where better cars will show race pace.
Thats of course if a similar pattern as to car performance continues. Next years Merc could be a belter!

He has finished the last three races in 5th, 10th and 4th.

This season so far, Lewis has had 2 mechanical failures while comfortably leading a race........this surely wasn't a problem which Jenson had to endure.

I'm not sure Hamilton can be blamed for a loss of electrical power, can he?

Edit: Apparently it was a fuel pump but the point remains the same.

With current engine rev's limited to well below their capability I don't think any driver can be blamed for engine failure either.

We now know from Martin Whitmarsh on the Beeb's forum that LH's issue was a mechanical failure of the fuel pump.

Edit: Gary Anderson just threw a spanner in the works explaining how the drive shaft for the fuel pump can be damaged by the car takiing punishment hitting kerbs, etc. Nice throw of a lifeline to the blame the driver for mech' breakdown theorists.
