Future F1 Grands Prix

Saw it this morning on Bloomberg news... Jersey race is off for 2013...

Not a bad thing... they have been working Austin for 2yrs and I really dont know if they will be 100% ready... the Jersey announcement I think gave them less than 18 months to get everything ready...

I should have stated that 100% ready means everything... I fully expect there to be some of the facilities that they are rushing to get done in the last week or so... track and everything needed for racing... I do not have any concerns...

American racing legend and COTA Ambassador Mario Andretti, actor Patrick Dempsey and Lotus’s third driver Jerome D’Ambrosio will all complete demonstration runs behind the wheel of the team’s 2010 F1 challenger, the R30, during the circuit’s Official Opening Ceremony on Sunday October 21.

Andretti will formally cut the ribbon to open the track by driving the opening laps of the circuit, in what will be the 1978 world champion’s first time behind the wheel of a contemporary Formula One car since he last competed in the sport in 1982.

Well Silverstone is safe until something like 2016. Monza has a short-term contract I think, but has always been on the calendar and with Ferrari's sway I doubt it would be dropped. That leaves question marks over Hockenheim/Nurburgring, Valencia, Catalunya, Hungaroring and Spa. As long as we kept a German and Belgian GP I think the result wouldn't be too bad, but Spain and Hungary have had a GP for around 20 years, a lot of heritage lost there. I guess this also put the dampers on Magny-Cours getting a GP back there anytime soon.
 
Paul Ricard boss Stephane Clair says there is a “90 per cent” chance the French circuit will host a grand prix in 2013. He suggested to Le Figaro that the country is first in line to step in to replace the delayed New York grand prix.

I would love to see a modern race at Paul Ricard!
Though surprisingly, New Jersey did get me excited. The promo-video Red Bull made looked very interesting; a fast street circuit with height changes!
 
I suppose, if the money can be provided, there would be no reason not to make a stop-off in France for a race before Silverstone, because of the 3-week-gap.
 
Would be better height changes in San Francisco mnmracer!

While it may seem like a shame it won't get near the Golden Gate bridge, I think the Nob Hill-Fisherman's Warff area would make a more interesting track. Let me take you through:

  • Start/finish is on Broadway Street, near the intersection with Columbus.

  • Breaking downhill and when you level out, a sharp turn left onto Front street, and after a short run, a double right onto The Embarcadero.

  • Quick straight over The Embarcadero past the Waterfront, before turning right onto Mission Street.

  • Another right onto fremont street into the high building Financial District, to then turn left for another straight, up the hill on California Street.

  • After Huntington Park, turn right onto Taylor Street past the big church.

  • Take a sharp left at Clay Street for another dash up the hill.
  • Levelling out at Jones street, they take a left, passing Sacramento to dive down the hill!

  • A quick right onto the broad California Street for a further dash downhill.

  • Turn right onto Van Ness Avenue and take the next left up the hill onto Sacramento.
  • Up and over the hill, past Lafayette Park to turn right onto Laguna Street.

  • Sweep right onto Pacific Avenue, and then left to dive down Octavia Street.

  • Break hard to fight gravity and turn right onto Broadway Street for a long straight.
  • Running down into the Broadway Tunnel for the run towards the start-finish line...

Oh goody, loads of 90 degree corners and no fast curves. The layout of US cities means that none of them are fit to run an F1 race. Imo.
There's a couple very wide streets you're turning on (fast corners), and the height differences make it more than "just some 90 degree corners ;-)
 
Which of these "fast corners" is the quality of Eau Rouge, Copse, 130R, the Parabolica or a host of others? It takes more than a steep hill to make a good F1 circuit.
 
Carlos Slim Jr was talking to Hermann Tilke, Carlos Slim Sr is believed to be the richest man in the world and Carlos Slim Jr is the head of Telmex so plenty of funds there for the potential Mexican GP
