Current Fernando Alonso

Suprised there's no thread (although I had one for his blogs), so i'll start off:

A double world championship vs Raikkonen and then Schumacher in 2005 and 2006 respectively elevated Alonso's status but, apparently, no one told his rookie teammate at his brand new team of a theoretical 'pecking order' the following season ... and the Spaniard was 'seen off' by the young Englishman, Hamilton, into two years of Wilderness while both Hamilton and an even younger Vettel began to make their mark through '08 and '09.

Arguably, Alonso was in the Top 3 of all the Formula One 'Aces' in the 2000s following Hakkinen's retirement - up there with either Schumacher/Raikkonen and, then, Raikkonen/Hamilton - and remains so in the early 2010s along with Hamilton/Vettel...with only Kubica knocking on the door until the Pole's horrible Rallying accident.

A question mark initially over 2004 during which Trulli lead him in the standing until the Italian fell out with ex-manager and team boss Flavio Briatore (Alonso's then business manager) under dubious circumstances after the French Grand Prix.

Another question mark is...Who has progressed more since the end of 2007: Hamilton or Alonso?

A fan. Then came the unfortunate blackmail allegations against McLaren boss Ron Dennis on the morning of the 2007 Hungarian GP which came to light at the highly costly FIA 'Spy-Gate' hearings before Spa...followed by the odour of the deliberate crashing of the Number 2 Renault car at Singapore in 2008 which lead to Alonso finishing 1st in the event and ended in the banning of Briatore and Pat Symmonds a year later.

2009 was a poor year with 'Nando's' mind likely on the prospect of Santander paving the way to better prospects at Maranello one year earlier.

2010 was a fresh start at Ferrari (who no longer had Schumacher walking through the premises regularly) but first half season mistakes ultimately cost him a title inspite of being infamously aided by a Team Orders switch w Massa at Hockenheim (which lead to more world-wide criticism).

Relatively fast, relatively consistent but prone to mistakes and a possible insecurity complex (*) based on wanting sole focus from a team and being only happy with a Number 2 in the other car running behind him. Anything else and it seemingly rattles him.

(*) This is my own personal opinion.

..and so to 2011...

He's underperformed only at Malaysia (hit Hamilton) and China (invisible while Massa challenged McLarens and Red Bulls) and, arguably, Canada...but has maximized his chances in the other 6 races culminating in the British GP win.

He said in his post-Monaco blog that 'Silverstone would be the WDC cut-off'...and so, after some major upgrades, the Ferrari looks a winner again. It might be too late for 2011 given Vettel's finishing rate...but the 2012 regs means they should keep the hammer down at Maranello.

He's signed on through to 2016...So hopes are high of a WDC at some juncture...but not yet.

The reality is Jenson would only be interested in a top drive, and rightfully so. The seats at Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull and Williams are settled and have been for some time. The fact is Jenson hasn't been looking as he is happy where he is and if McLaren drop him he will probably follow Mark Webber to sports cars.

You must know Jenson pretty well then mate ;)

Not at all....he said sports cars were a strong possibility when he was interviewed by the BBC. Your probably better to bait someone else, most of my postings come from reliable sources and usually quote drivers directly though I realise some people have a more accurate idea of what a driver is thinking and doing than the driver himself. I really wonder how they manage to drive their cars, maybe they read this site first.

Objection your honor, I am not baiting you. I am merely pointing out that you object to the fact that other members of this site are contradicting you with a mixture of opinion, based on published fact, and general opinion because you, and I quote " leave the personal judgements to those that actually know them".

Your statement in the Jenson Button thread about Jenson not looking happy where he is, is a statement of personal opinion is it not?

In your rebutal of my post above, your defense is that Buttons intention of going to sports cars has been published on the BBC. Well a great deal of Alonso's actions at McLaren have been seen, reported and published on various media outlets and are used to form the basis of my fellow posters opinions.

I for example, clearly remember Alonso sat in the pits waiting and waiting, and thus preventing Hamilton from coming in and changing his tyres to do one more qualification run. Hardly the actions of a guilt free driver who did nothing to harm the harmony and working relationships of the team he was in. That fact has nothing to do with Spygate. That is the type of driver that McLaren are knowingly re-signing. As I said, Ron clearly see's Alonso as a McLaren typre of driver. Whatever it takes to get the job done.

Kewee you always claim to know everything better than anyone else, and rubbish anything anyone else says! Maybe the occasional bit of humility might mean that people don't have a go at you!
I read the BBC, Autosport and Planet F1 so I don't know why you would assume I claim to know more than anyone else. I do take exception when people take to their keyboards and type away things that clearly only exist in their imagination and I sometimes choose to take them up on it. Your comment followed my response to cider_and_toast when I was responding to a sarcastic comment stating I must know Jenson pretty well. As I said, Jensons statement that he may switch to sports cars was straight off the BBC so to have a poke at me was unnecessary. Do you mind telling me why I shouldn't respond.

A couple of points cider_and_toast ...... The Button comment wasn't opinion, he stated he was very happy at McLaren and staying with the team was his preference and he hadn't been looking for other options with other teams. Not opinion, clearly stated fact.
Your comment about Alonso I've covered very clearly when I said he handled his time at McLaren very badly. That is something I've repeated numerous time on various threads on this site for a number of years. It was a very broad comment that covered his behaviour at various times during the season, not just spygate, though in saying that he wasn't always at fault, certainly not in the early part of the season up to the Monaco GP.

One last point, I didn't say Jenson was not looking happy where he was. Try reading my posting again, that way you won't misquote me and apply the completely opposite meaning. I actually said "Jenson has said he's very happy where he is". Your misquote indicates I said the opposite.

Kewee next you'll be telling us you don't think Alonso knew about crashgate
Yes I will and I will say why. Anyone who believes he was involved is basing that belief on suspicion, not fact.
The facts are clear. The FIA investigated the entire affair in depth and cleared Alonso of any involvement. I don't know what their decisions were based on but I do know in part at least, Alonso wasn't at the circuit when the plan was conceived. The meeting that took place involved Briatore, Piquet and two others who remained unnamed though the FIA made it clear Alonso wasn't one of the unnamed, wasn't present and knew nothing of the race plan. Those are facts and I prefer to stay with facts and avoid suspicion.

My apologies, I did indeed mis-read your quote.

The fact remains however, that regardless of my reading it in a positive or negative light. you are still commenting on Button as fact that he is happy where he is or that he will only driver for a top team. All you have to base this on is reported information. I stand by my comment that you can not claim that any poster here can use a quote or fact and extrapolate it to form an opinion of driver action or thought and yet do the same yourself regardless of the original source material.

Despite what some would like to believe, they were close and he always appreciated how much Alonso gave during his five years with the team.

Here is another of your quotes that has no bearing on the "on track" ability and yet you show an excellent insight into the relationship between Alonso and Montezemolo. I recently read an article by Nigel Roebuck that says the exact opposite and he knows Alonso and Montezemolo. I guess he's just making a personal statement based on hearsay as well then.
