Current Fernando Alonso

Suprised there's no thread (although I had one for his blogs), so i'll start off:

A double world championship vs Raikkonen and then Schumacher in 2005 and 2006 respectively elevated Alonso's status but, apparently, no one told his rookie teammate at his brand new team of a theoretical 'pecking order' the following season ... and the Spaniard was 'seen off' by the young Englishman, Hamilton, into two years of Wilderness while both Hamilton and an even younger Vettel began to make their mark through '08 and '09.

Arguably, Alonso was in the Top 3 of all the Formula One 'Aces' in the 2000s following Hakkinen's retirement - up there with either Schumacher/Raikkonen and, then, Raikkonen/Hamilton - and remains so in the early 2010s along with Hamilton/Vettel...with only Kubica knocking on the door until the Pole's horrible Rallying accident.

A question mark initially over 2004 during which Trulli lead him in the standing until the Italian fell out with ex-manager and team boss Flavio Briatore (Alonso's then business manager) under dubious circumstances after the French Grand Prix.

Another question mark is...Who has progressed more since the end of 2007: Hamilton or Alonso?

A fan. Then came the unfortunate blackmail allegations against McLaren boss Ron Dennis on the morning of the 2007 Hungarian GP which came to light at the highly costly FIA 'Spy-Gate' hearings before Spa...followed by the odour of the deliberate crashing of the Number 2 Renault car at Singapore in 2008 which lead to Alonso finishing 1st in the event and ended in the banning of Briatore and Pat Symmonds a year later.

2009 was a poor year with 'Nando's' mind likely on the prospect of Santander paving the way to better prospects at Maranello one year earlier.

2010 was a fresh start at Ferrari (who no longer had Schumacher walking through the premises regularly) but first half season mistakes ultimately cost him a title inspite of being infamously aided by a Team Orders switch w Massa at Hockenheim (which lead to more world-wide criticism).

Relatively fast, relatively consistent but prone to mistakes and a possible insecurity complex (*) based on wanting sole focus from a team and being only happy with a Number 2 in the other car running behind him. Anything else and it seemingly rattles him.

(*) This is my own personal opinion.

..and so to 2011...

He's underperformed only at Malaysia (hit Hamilton) and China (invisible while Massa challenged McLarens and Red Bulls) and, arguably, Canada...but has maximized his chances in the other 6 races culminating in the British GP win.

He said in his post-Monaco blog that 'Silverstone would be the WDC cut-off'...and so, after some major upgrades, the Ferrari looks a winner again. It might be too late for 2011 given Vettel's finishing rate...but the 2012 regs means they should keep the hammer down at Maranello.

He's signed on through to 2016...So hopes are high of a WDC at some juncture...but not yet.

Never have been one to cause ripples Brogan. Normally I just put it aside, sometimes I'll humour someone and hope they'll see some fun in it. I'm not about to report anyone. If it was affecting me that badly I would do as you suggested and quit forums. Normally I'm not quite as thin skinned as I have been recently. Possibly living with the fear of a brain scan has had an impact during the last four weeks. The results were negative thank God.

Not reporting posts does more harm than good, especially when threads get dragged off topic discussing the very thing which should have been reported in the first place.

If Alonso is winning and racing at the front then he will be happy and 2007 will be forgotten but if Mclaren are also rans and his teammate is getting the better of him then there could some serious flashpoints to deal with

2007 would not have ended the way it was for him if he felt he was comfortably winning or leading the championship without worrying about his teammate being his nearest challenger

2007 should already be forgotten, in fact there was little point in discussing it. His teammate won't get the better of him regardless of who he is. I'd put my house on that. :)

If the future we're talking about is McLaren then 2007 is significant unfortunately. He got beaten by his team mate in that team and blackmailed the boss. It's only natural people will speculate about motives of the two and why of all drivers and teams they'd reunite.

Nobody thought Hamilton would beat him, he did. No one thought Button would beat Hamilton, he did, nobody thought Ricciardo would beat Vettel....

All things being equal Alonso is beatable.

Incubus
Well the wait goes on and it was suggested the deal was done this week because he is going down to Woking

Kewee

2007 will be remembered for Alonso's dark side and he can only really vanquish it if he wins the drivers title for Mclaren otherwise I could see trouble for both sides ahead if he does not going forward. At first he said he was really happy at Ferrari and enjoying life and fast forward 5 years he has ended probably even better although his frustrations are aimed at Vettel and his own team's incompetence

An amusing little spat, if a little unfair to one participant.

I, too, am a Nando fan - merely because he is a very fine driver and, possibly, one of the best.

Over the years I have seen the 'black side' of many drivers and TPs. I have read copiously and realised that the media is as capable of reporting accurately as we are at disseminating all that rehearsed information. So without wanting to be rude to any of you, I would suggest that no-one will ever know the true ins and outs of any driver's/TP's career and it is all surmise.

We pick up on what suits our point of view and then back it up with bogus bumph spouted by those as equally in the dark as the average fan.

Personally, I would just like to enjoy the racing without having to justify my preferences to the nth degree.

If Alonso did not act the way he did would we be talking about a potential 7 time world champion not just a double world champion

that is the tragedy about his legacy his record deserves better than just 2 world titles

Sorry Il_leone but I belong to the school of thought that says the best driver in any given year is that year's world champion. End of. Anything else is just coulda-woulda-shoulda.

There's more to talent than purely driving the car fast. It also includes the talent of finding yourself in the right car at the right time.

yes he is an awesome driver and really I would have liked him winning 2012 title at least.... his abilities and achievements are somewhat overlooked by the superior performance of the Red Bull by Vettel in those 4 years

What's more he has a history of bad career choices. He could have been a Brawn driver driver in 2009. with a firm offer from Brawn and (at the time) Honda. As we now know he already had a Ferrari contract in his pocket that was originally due to take effect in 2011.

Whoever heard a agreeing to join a team three years in advance, not knowing anything of what engineering staff would be at the team by then?
