Current Fernando Alonso

Suprised there's no thread (although I had one for his blogs), so i'll start off:

A double world championship vs Raikkonen and then Schumacher in 2005 and 2006 respectively elevated Alonso's status but, apparently, no one told his rookie teammate at his brand new team of a theoretical 'pecking order' the following season ... and the Spaniard was 'seen off' by the young Englishman, Hamilton, into two years of Wilderness while both Hamilton and an even younger Vettel began to make their mark through '08 and '09.

Arguably, Alonso was in the Top 3 of all the Formula One 'Aces' in the 2000s following Hakkinen's retirement - up there with either Schumacher/Raikkonen and, then, Raikkonen/Hamilton - and remains so in the early 2010s along with Hamilton/Vettel...with only Kubica knocking on the door until the Pole's horrible Rallying accident.

A question mark initially over 2004 during which Trulli lead him in the standing until the Italian fell out with ex-manager and team boss Flavio Briatore (Alonso's then business manager) under dubious circumstances after the French Grand Prix.

Another question mark is...Who has progressed more since the end of 2007: Hamilton or Alonso?

A fan. Then came the unfortunate blackmail allegations against McLaren boss Ron Dennis on the morning of the 2007 Hungarian GP which came to light at the highly costly FIA 'Spy-Gate' hearings before Spa...followed by the odour of the deliberate crashing of the Number 2 Renault car at Singapore in 2008 which lead to Alonso finishing 1st in the event and ended in the banning of Briatore and Pat Symmonds a year later.

2009 was a poor year with 'Nando's' mind likely on the prospect of Santander paving the way to better prospects at Maranello one year earlier.

2010 was a fresh start at Ferrari (who no longer had Schumacher walking through the premises regularly) but first half season mistakes ultimately cost him a title inspite of being infamously aided by a Team Orders switch w Massa at Hockenheim (which lead to more world-wide criticism).

Relatively fast, relatively consistent but prone to mistakes and a possible insecurity complex (*) based on wanting sole focus from a team and being only happy with a Number 2 in the other car running behind him. Anything else and it seemingly rattles him.

(*) This is my own personal opinion.

..and so to 2011...

He's underperformed only at Malaysia (hit Hamilton) and China (invisible while Massa challenged McLarens and Red Bulls) and, arguably, Canada...but has maximized his chances in the other 6 races culminating in the British GP win.

He said in his post-Monaco blog that 'Silverstone would be the WDC cut-off'...and so, after some major upgrades, the Ferrari looks a winner again. It might be too late for 2011 given Vettel's finishing rate...but the 2012 regs means they should keep the hammer down at Maranello.

He's signed on through to 2016...So hopes are high of a WDC at some juncture...but not yet.

the great drivers today succeed because they would have orchestrated some sort of team politics I am going be shot down if I exclude Hamilton from this

Certainly Prost, Piquet, Mansell, Senna, Schumacher, Alonso and Vettel have all won titles invoking some form of team politics

- have to say both Hill and Button won without playing hard ball team politics

Titch a bit difficult when Ron Dennis pretty much overthrown Martin Whitmarsh overnight and put KMag into the other car allegedly

The only way Button's position would have been stronger is if both Vettel and Alonso had stayed or simply swapped their contracts because Ron relentlessly pursued Alonso if it was not it would have been Vettel or Hamilton

Then Honda might say something about keeping Button because he is popular in Japan

Now I can only think if Santander suddenly come back and say to Mclaren that they would like to increase sponsorship for the team because both drivers are useful for their marketing which would help

Mclaren have not found a title sponsor so if that sponsor demanded a British driver it would help but I cant see it happening

Titch

I meant Button is good for Santander in the UK marketing strategy

Jen
Alonso was under contract was he not at Ferrari so why would Mclaren persist unless they felt they just might

Who else do you think was Mclaren's No 1 target - Hamilton for a brief moment after Spa maybe

I think it fair to say that contracts mean little in F1.

That aside, why would RD pursue someone who, allegedly, almost sank him, Unless he (RD) wanted revenge, realised that Nando was not a primary suspect or believed that he (Nando) could dig McLaren out of a hole - or a mix of all three?

The other option is that, if true, the contract is between Honda and Nando and has sod all to do with RD or even McLaren.

Jen Ron was prepared to move on .. it is Alonso who appears to be less certain until now about committing to Mclaren and Honda

Alonso attitude back then did not help and not many people cross Ron and survive.. Ron never spoke to him apparently from Hungary onwards so that is 4 months of hell everyone has to put up with

Brogan......If McLaren hadn't been cheating there wouldn't have been anything for the FIA to investigate, no hearing in Paris to force Alonso to appear before under the threat of the withdrawal of his super licence, no 100 million fine........I've always said Alonso handled his time a McLaren badly but he wasn't an instigator in the spygate scandal and there were many others involved more deeply than Alonso, whose reputations remained unscathed. The fact that we are still taking about Alonso while others who were deeply involved are forgotten says it all really. I'm unsure how my posting is rewriting history, I wouldn't have posted it if I didn't believe it was accurate but in saying that the entire affair is a pretty contentious issue that many have their own views on. Yours are obviously different than mine, I don't have a problem with that, it's pretty normal to agree to disagree on any online forum.

Don't know about you Andyoak but all my devices, Laptops, Mobiles personal and business, are constantly crammed full of crap I don't want, haven't asked for and would sooner not have to filter or delete. You don't have to be involved in anything to be a recipient of electronic messaging. If you own a computer and obviously you do, don't tell me you don't realise that.

Whatever we say, it's clearly all water under the bridge now. Since most people, myself included, generally agree with Max Mosely on very few things except his opinion of Ron Dennis, it's unlikely that Ron would suddenly change his mind over night about a man who did so much damage (perceived, real, accused, recorded or otherwise) to the good name of McLaren. To re-sign Alonso is a brave move for both parties. The first sign of trouble / tension will be magnified by thoughts of "oh no not again".

I think it goes to show that Alonso is "a McLaren type of driver" whatever that may mean where as there are a number who have raced for the team who, in Ron's eyes, weren't.

No Hamberg ...... I don't have a problem, I'm just happy to judge Alonso and Hamilton and Button etc. on their on-track performances and leave the personal judgements to those that actually know them. They're the ones that have enough respect to keep their friendships with the various drivers private.
