Current Fernando Alonso

Suprised there's no thread (although I had one for his blogs), so i'll start off:

A double world championship vs Raikkonen and then Schumacher in 2005 and 2006 respectively elevated Alonso's status but, apparently, no one told his rookie teammate at his brand new team of a theoretical 'pecking order' the following season ... and the Spaniard was 'seen off' by the young Englishman, Hamilton, into two years of Wilderness while both Hamilton and an even younger Vettel began to make their mark through '08 and '09.

Arguably, Alonso was in the Top 3 of all the Formula One 'Aces' in the 2000s following Hakkinen's retirement - up there with either Schumacher/Raikkonen and, then, Raikkonen/Hamilton - and remains so in the early 2010s along with Hamilton/Vettel...with only Kubica knocking on the door until the Pole's horrible Rallying accident.

A question mark initially over 2004 during which Trulli lead him in the standing until the Italian fell out with ex-manager and team boss Flavio Briatore (Alonso's then business manager) under dubious circumstances after the French Grand Prix.

Another question mark is...Who has progressed more since the end of 2007: Hamilton or Alonso?

A fan. Then came the unfortunate blackmail allegations against McLaren boss Ron Dennis on the morning of the 2007 Hungarian GP which came to light at the highly costly FIA 'Spy-Gate' hearings before Spa...followed by the odour of the deliberate crashing of the Number 2 Renault car at Singapore in 2008 which lead to Alonso finishing 1st in the event and ended in the banning of Briatore and Pat Symmonds a year later.

2009 was a poor year with 'Nando's' mind likely on the prospect of Santander paving the way to better prospects at Maranello one year earlier.

2010 was a fresh start at Ferrari (who no longer had Schumacher walking through the premises regularly) but first half season mistakes ultimately cost him a title inspite of being infamously aided by a Team Orders switch w Massa at Hockenheim (which lead to more world-wide criticism).

Relatively fast, relatively consistent but prone to mistakes and a possible insecurity complex (*) based on wanting sole focus from a team and being only happy with a Number 2 in the other car running behind him. Anything else and it seemingly rattles him.

(*) This is my own personal opinion.

..and so to 2011...

He's underperformed only at Malaysia (hit Hamilton) and China (invisible while Massa challenged McLarens and Red Bulls) and, arguably, Canada...but has maximized his chances in the other 6 races culminating in the British GP win.

He said in his post-Monaco blog that 'Silverstone would be the WDC cut-off'...and so, after some major upgrades, the Ferrari looks a winner again. It might be too late for 2011 given Vettel's finishing rate...but the 2012 regs means they should keep the hammer down at Maranello.

He's signed on through to 2016...So hopes are high of a WDC at some juncture...but not yet.

Which leaves Red Bull (no), Toro Rosso (no), Caterham (no), Ferrari, Sauber (no), Marussia (no), McLaren, and not F1. Don't think its Ferrari's F1 team. So McLaren or not in F1. I'm willing to put big money on McLaren, but I want to be the first on here to suggest Alonso to Formula E.

Would it be totally ipossible to suggest he might after all remain at Ferrari?
We have to remember the only person who professionally linked to Vettel who said Vettel was off to Ferrari has been Christian Horner, and he himself only said it on the day Vettel announced his departure. Nothing about the move has been said by either Seb himself nor Ferrari. Vettel was quoted telling the press "I'm sure you guys are clever enough to understand why I cannot confirm anything at the moment"... So it might not be a done deal.

And crucially Alonso can't join McLaren, he's got facial hair at the moment.

I reckon he's staying at Ferrari and he's just waiting for Kimi's deal to be terminated. Thats why he can't say where he's going....

If you were Ferrair which driver would you keep Alonso or Kimi..... thats a no-brainer Kimi must go.... just think of the positive PR of an Alonso / Vettel team......

Along with Tuscan, I am starting to think that a Vettel / Alonso pairing at Ferrari is the only thing that makes any sense. I realize that Ferrari is extremely reticent to pay off Kimi for a second time, but it's gonna be a tough sell to the Tifosi if they say Fernando didn't fit their rebuilding plan, but Raikkonen does. On the other hand, Kimi Raikkonen is the last remaining link to any past glory in Maranello. They may be hesitant to cut ties for that reason alone.

A McLaren reunion just seems so far fetched at the moment. Especially with Button upping his game recently.

And his little tease that he won't be driving a Merc engine rules out Lotus.

According to the BBC Alonso's contract with Ferrari has already been terminated at his own request. I guessing the final details of a contract with Mclaren are being finalised. I would assume Honda are probably the only party prepared to pay him out of his current contract with Ferrari. There's also news that Gerhard Berger is set to take over as team principle which would also smooth the way and create a more settled environment by creating space between Alonso and Ron Dennis.

I thought the rumours of Berger at the helm had already been thoroughly rubbished by Dennis?

And it's Andrew Benson who claimed Alonso's contract had been terminated "although it hasn't been announced"... hardly the most reliable source is he?

According to Alonso there a just a couple of details to be finalised before an announcement. To me that means he's leaving Ferrari as there would be nothing to sign off on if he was staying as he already has a contract for taking him through 2015 and beyond. I would suggest there's a little work involved in buying him out of his contract. There's also the small issue of 33 million euros to take care of.

Kewee if Alonso does sign, do you think Ferrari will give their seat to another driver for the last races, to give a young driver a chance?

ATL11 ..... I'm only guessing along with everyone else but I would assume he would remain under contract until the end of the season. A couple of points. I don't believe there are bad feelings on either side, more a huge amount of disappointment for both parties. Ferrari know they've let Alonso down and Alonso has been very patient waiting for a decent car, or at least a car he could help develop into a competitive package. Sadly Ferrari have failed him for five years. The other point, Alonso must feel he's with a very different team now than, the team he signed with, due to so many personal changes. Some people may feel that shouldn't matter, I think changes all around him would be at the very least, unsettling.

Hmmm. Didn't we have a "comebacks" thread at one time? I'll have a dig about as some have been a tad more successful than others.

I'm not even convinced Mercedes is really an option for Alonso, they have two younger and extremely competitive drivers. And it would be a pretty big punch in the face for one of them to be told they're going to be shown the door after next year.

However, if we can get Alonso and Hamilton in the same team again that would be incredible!

Regarding Mercedes... http://www1.skysports.com/f1/report...ge-lewis-hamilton-from-his-mercedes-race-seat

Toto Wolff insists high-flying Lewis Hamilton will not find himself under threat for his race seat at Mercedes for 2016 as the team wait to commence contract renewal talks with the Briton on the conclusion of the Drivers’ Championship fight.

And, amid the Alonso rumours, Wolff added on Hamilton’s position at the team: “Nobody’s going to take that seat away from him until he decides so.”

I think Mercedes is a non-starter unless they're going to oust Rosberg.
Even then, Alonso has confirmed he won't be driving anything with a Mercedes engine next year.

F1Yorkshire This should be for another thread but would we really? With all the telemetry etc. available to be shared back and forth between cars/drivers in the same team I think it makes it harder to identify some of their attributes. My suspicion is that Rosberg would be further behind Hamilton if there wasn't so much telemetry and setup sharing going on, for example, but that's just a gut feeling.
