Current Fernando Alonso

Suprised there's no thread (although I had one for his blogs), so i'll start off:

A double world championship vs Raikkonen and then Schumacher in 2005 and 2006 respectively elevated Alonso's status but, apparently, no one told his rookie teammate at his brand new team of a theoretical 'pecking order' the following season ... and the Spaniard was 'seen off' by the young Englishman, Hamilton, into two years of Wilderness while both Hamilton and an even younger Vettel began to make their mark through '08 and '09.

Arguably, Alonso was in the Top 3 of all the Formula One 'Aces' in the 2000s following Hakkinen's retirement - up there with either Schumacher/Raikkonen and, then, Raikkonen/Hamilton - and remains so in the early 2010s along with Hamilton/Vettel...with only Kubica knocking on the door until the Pole's horrible Rallying accident.

A question mark initially over 2004 during which Trulli lead him in the standing until the Italian fell out with ex-manager and team boss Flavio Briatore (Alonso's then business manager) under dubious circumstances after the French Grand Prix.

Another question mark is...Who has progressed more since the end of 2007: Hamilton or Alonso?

A fan. Then came the unfortunate blackmail allegations against McLaren boss Ron Dennis on the morning of the 2007 Hungarian GP which came to light at the highly costly FIA 'Spy-Gate' hearings before Spa...followed by the odour of the deliberate crashing of the Number 2 Renault car at Singapore in 2008 which lead to Alonso finishing 1st in the event and ended in the banning of Briatore and Pat Symmonds a year later.

2009 was a poor year with 'Nando's' mind likely on the prospect of Santander paving the way to better prospects at Maranello one year earlier.

2010 was a fresh start at Ferrari (who no longer had Schumacher walking through the premises regularly) but first half season mistakes ultimately cost him a title inspite of being infamously aided by a Team Orders switch w Massa at Hockenheim (which lead to more world-wide criticism).

Relatively fast, relatively consistent but prone to mistakes and a possible insecurity complex (*) based on wanting sole focus from a team and being only happy with a Number 2 in the other car running behind him. Anything else and it seemingly rattles him.

(*) This is my own personal opinion.

..and so to 2011...

He's underperformed only at Malaysia (hit Hamilton) and China (invisible while Massa challenged McLarens and Red Bulls) and, arguably, Canada...but has maximized his chances in the other 6 races culminating in the British GP win.

He said in his post-Monaco blog that 'Silverstone would be the WDC cut-off'...and so, after some major upgrades, the Ferrari looks a winner again. It might be too late for 2011 given Vettel's finishing rate...but the 2012 regs means they should keep the hammer down at Maranello.

He's signed on through to 2016...So hopes are high of a WDC at some juncture...but not yet.

It's from a TV interview of De Montezemolo but he'd already said prety much the same thing a few week ago though didn't he?
That's why I feel a bit wary about Benson's articles on the beeb. there's nothing in the article about when said TV interview took place but he seems to have merely reproduced the contents of an interview thattook place weeks ago - and passing it off as a news story.

Alonso doesn't have a lot of choice. He's out of Ferrari, Red Bull didn't even consider him, Merc don't want him unless Lewis walks...and that's unlikely. Williams, as someone mentioned is unlikely. Lotus? With the Merc engine? Possible. Or McLaren. It's quite damning really for one of the top two drivers to find himself in this position. But he comes with baggage, some of which he acquired at McLaren. So could it be McLaren? Historically they hire the best drivers, and with Honda coming on board surely they will want to make a statement and do this. At the moment they have Mag, who shows promise but isn't yet a ' statement' driver. And they have Button who is a safe pair of hands but is not a top liner, is getting long in the tooth and isn't really the guy to lead the team through the redevelopment with the new engine . So they have little available that fits the bill. They could try to buy Lewis back at the end of 2015 with big money, but I don't think he'd go. So there's Alonso; who is a top line driver and could lead the team...if the team could stand it. Or is Ron 'playing' Alonso, payback time? Would he do that? I still feel he had a finger in Max's demise. But wouldn't getting the best available driver outweigh the pay back? Oh the intrigue!

Two other options for Alonso are a sabbatical. Which I think would be unwise at this time of his career. Or might he be getting involved with an American team?

If Alonso and Lewis ever become teammates again then I suggest you duck for cover because any perceived shenanigans that may or may not have gone on this year will pale into insignificance.

Edit.

Fuck it bring it on it will liven up F1 no end...

LOL. Well Nico is contracted, so the only way in for Alonso would be if Lewis doesn't sign, which is unlikely. But yes. I imagine if it somehow were Lewis and Alonso things may be turbulent.

If people want to compare Schumacher and ALonso.. you do wonder if Briatore was made team principal and allowed to handle the team politics and he had Pat Symonds as his technical director like Schumacher had Todt and Brawn whether Fernando would be world champion multiple times

Alonso has made Ferrari look a lot better than it should really...you have to blame Luca Di Montezemolo for allowing things to run this way because he was adamant that he wanted to do things the Italian way

but off course it does not help that Flavio's reputation is stained and people become distrustful of him

Remember when Alonso blackmailed McLaren, Merc picked up a lot of the bill from the resulting fine. If Merc didn't have Lewis possibly. But they do have Lewis. I'd have thought a third car would be ideal to give to an up and coming driver since they have two strong drivers already, a third, with a tendency to destabilise isn't necessary. But this is F 1, so who knows. I guess if Alonso is driving for Merc, he isn't driving for someone else...so there is that line if thinking.

if it was 3 cars - there maybe an inkling to run a young upcoming driver because that is what Mercedes always do in other categories partner youth and experience drivers together. Therefore I would say Bottas would probably be the one

so it is not a given that Alonso can get the Merc drive. Does Alonso have people within Mercedes that wants him?

Seems obvious to me. Purely speculation though.

Vettel wanted to drive for Ferrari and was at a position where his get out clause of his contract has come into effect.
Ferrari think Vettel being a 4 time world champion means he is actually capable of driving any car to victory.
Vettels contract terms at Ferrari insist on him being the number one driver and have a team mate who won't be allowed to challenge him.
