Current Fernando Alonso

Suprised there's no thread (although I had one for his blogs), so i'll start off:

A double world championship vs Raikkonen and then Schumacher in 2005 and 2006 respectively elevated Alonso's status but, apparently, no one told his rookie teammate at his brand new team of a theoretical 'pecking order' the following season ... and the Spaniard was 'seen off' by the young Englishman, Hamilton, into two years of Wilderness while both Hamilton and an even younger Vettel began to make their mark through '08 and '09.

Arguably, Alonso was in the Top 3 of all the Formula One 'Aces' in the 2000s following Hakkinen's retirement - up there with either Schumacher/Raikkonen and, then, Raikkonen/Hamilton - and remains so in the early 2010s along with Hamilton/Vettel...with only Kubica knocking on the door until the Pole's horrible Rallying accident.

A question mark initially over 2004 during which Trulli lead him in the standing until the Italian fell out with ex-manager and team boss Flavio Briatore (Alonso's then business manager) under dubious circumstances after the French Grand Prix.

Another question mark is...Who has progressed more since the end of 2007: Hamilton or Alonso?

A fan. Then came the unfortunate blackmail allegations against McLaren boss Ron Dennis on the morning of the 2007 Hungarian GP which came to light at the highly costly FIA 'Spy-Gate' hearings before Spa...followed by the odour of the deliberate crashing of the Number 2 Renault car at Singapore in 2008 which lead to Alonso finishing 1st in the event and ended in the banning of Briatore and Pat Symmonds a year later.

2009 was a poor year with 'Nando's' mind likely on the prospect of Santander paving the way to better prospects at Maranello one year earlier.

2010 was a fresh start at Ferrari (who no longer had Schumacher walking through the premises regularly) but first half season mistakes ultimately cost him a title inspite of being infamously aided by a Team Orders switch w Massa at Hockenheim (which lead to more world-wide criticism).

Relatively fast, relatively consistent but prone to mistakes and a possible insecurity complex (*) based on wanting sole focus from a team and being only happy with a Number 2 in the other car running behind him. Anything else and it seemingly rattles him.

(*) This is my own personal opinion.

..and so to 2011...

He's underperformed only at Malaysia (hit Hamilton) and China (invisible while Massa challenged McLarens and Red Bulls) and, arguably, Canada...but has maximized his chances in the other 6 races culminating in the British GP win.

He said in his post-Monaco blog that 'Silverstone would be the WDC cut-off'...and so, after some major upgrades, the Ferrari looks a winner again. It might be too late for 2011 given Vettel's finishing rate...but the 2012 regs means they should keep the hammer down at Maranello.

He's signed on through to 2016...So hopes are high of a WDC at some juncture...but not yet.

For me the three best drivers in F1 are Alonso, Kimi and Vettel, because they don't let outside influences interfere with their work, they don't give a shit if the team doesn't like what they say or do, they couldn't care less if their girlfriend dumps them or if they have the support of their closest friends and family, they wouldn't think twice about jumping ship if they thought another team would give them a better chance of winning, they just get on with the job they are paid to do and do it well regardless of anything else, and it is that purity of thought that makes them great....

Rock on Fernando you are a top bloke..

About as subtle as a bull in a china shop LOL. Also, I'm not sure I like the sound of someone who couldn't care less if their girlfriend dumped them or if they had the support of their family and friends. I'm pretty certain Alonso, Raikkonen and Vettel have feelings too, they're just not as close to the surface as Hamilton's nor as open about it in the media. Having said that, I think Vettel is quite an open and emotional person, it's just that he's rarely had reason to be negative so far.

Maybe we just have extremely high expectations :D

No you are right, but I still think he should show his emotions less and not answer questions about his personal life so much, which is something Alonso does well I think (now we can get back on topic ;))

I think it is much easier to not answer questions about your personal life, if like Alonso and Vettel, one is asked said questions on fewer occasions than Hamilton.

Anyway, what he chooses to disclose to the media is his own business. If his performance is equivalent or better when he's being open, then surely that's what he should do.

Alonso, meanwhile, is under far less intense pressure from the media the majority of us consume than he is from the Spanish press corps where I believe his extraneous adventures (McZiderRed ) are considered far more newsworthy.

I think we all too often fall for the trap of judging by the impressions we get from a slanted media profile.

Oddly, I believe everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. Merely because a view is opposed to one's own or not couched in the subtlest terms does not make one a troll - which is basically what some of the recent posts here are suggesting.

Most have a 'favourite' - mine is Nando but I don't bang on about it all the time nor do I jump to his defence whenever there is an adverse comment posted (which is fairly often), but that is just me.

Others are a little more proactive in support of their favourites. - different characters and all that. However, the hyper-defensive can be quite testing too!

Sorry peeps I didn't expect this much attention to a post I posted really really late at night whilst suffering another bout of insomnia, my post wasn't just directed at Lewis I was thinking of Button as well -and other drivers- where he is too public about the car not being right, balance, understeer, oversteer that sort of thing but he does seem to be making a conscious effort not to use those words these days, maybe he reads this site.. ;) We knew when kimi wasn't happy with his steering rack but Kimi said nothing about it we heard it from the team...

Many times I wish that Lewis would just tell some journalists, while being questioned about his personal life that it's none of your business, and to some who may still just persist, to go and :censored: off!

Back on topic (less than subtle hint there boys and girls) was Nando sporting his moustache when he won in Spain? If so is he the first moustachioed driver to win a Grand Prix since Nigel Mansell?

Doesn't Alonso have a moustache/beard combo, thus succeeding Button?

Maybe Nico R should sport a tache on his dad's birthday our something...

Nah, Button's is "designer stubble" or "bum fluff" as my dad used to call it. Nando's is separate bits so there is some beard action goign on I suppose. On Nico...
