Grand Prix 2023 Canadian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

This weekend its our 2nd of planned 5 trips to North American continent the most in F1 history beating the record held since 1982 when F1 went to Long beach, Detroit, Mexico & Caesars palace car park, shows the recent explosion, you could say recovery in American popularity when as recent as 2009 Brazil was the only time in the season we visited either North or South America, as F1 still felt the effects of Indy 2005 debacle

but its a relief to be talking about a race. because a week ago it didnt look good with all the wildfires in america & canada. we might be in the imola situation, but im things must have calmed down if F1 are going, because they are more mindful of world events now, unlike previous regime's repuatation of ploughing on regardless

Canada is normally 1 of my favourite races, a great location on the island ile Notre dame with all the trees & the beaches. as with most historic circuits like Monaco, spa, Silverstone it wasn’t constructed with motorsports in mind, as it Originally built as a venue for Expo 67/worlds fair that would take place in montreal. it then laid as a white elephant for 9 years until they montreal hosted the olympics & then 2 years later F1 moved to this location after deeming mosport park too dangerous. which is what makes it a year around place because there many tourist attraction or just places of work dotted around the circuit gilles villenueve, you may have missed or seen & not known what they are, if we go in circuit order
  • on the right of the braking zone of turn 1, you have the popular with families Jean Dore Beach, which you have to purchase a ticket before your allowed entry
  • on the exit of the turn 6 & 7 chicane where Button famously won in 2012 you have the offices of island & a popular venue for weddings
  • on the entry to the hairpin on the left. the montreal biosphere will come into view that was built for the expo 67
  • on the exit to the hairpin on the left, it has boating lake that was used for 1976 olympic rowing events. on the back straight.
  • also halfway down the back straight, on the right. is the Casino de montreal
  • on the start / finish straight underneath the grandstands are 8 beach volleyball courts
  • the whole circuit is usually hope for 11 months of the year with it only being closed for F1 contrustion, is open as national park would be. so it usually used for cyclists
on this weekend, we have the usual forecast of rain that will likely never turn up. but then why break with its tradition. we will have red bull again attempting to try to win every race this season, or at least beat mclaren record in 1988 of 15 consecutive victories, but take Verstappen out of it & we would have a very interesting year because can Mercedes build on their promising upgrades, Aston Martin are bringing the own upgrade package to this race as well. that they will hope will end the blip seen at spanish gp where they went from fighting verstappen for the win to fighting ocon for 7th

I've said this numerous times before but once again a team spent more time watching what the opposition were doing than worrying about their own race.

Leclerc knew that slicks were the right call at the start of Q2 and told the team. Ferrari's response was that Verstappen had stayed out.

So ****ing what!!

Albon took slicks from the beginning and rightly proved that was the correct call by setting the fastest time.
its so frustrating & i will add mercedes to that who got ridiclously lucky. the golden rule for as long as we have had intermediates & wets. is be on the right tyre at the right time. its ridiculous how many teams still get it wrong. im not surprised that albon went for it because it looked dry enough for a gamble in final mins of Q1. but as said many times the top teams are so risk averse now. when nobody pits from the lead from safety car anymore it cost leclerc the win in britain,

i don't blame him leclerc for being furious. he wanted the dry tyres at the start like williams & pitwall said stick with the inters. mercedes massively cocked it up but got lucky, i couldnt believe what i heard when told hamilton they thought it was still too wet. you want to shake them & say Albon has just gone 2 secs quicker in a williams. get him on the softs.

i always think if rain is coming in then you have to trust the team, but you have to trust the drivers on a drying track. it is what jenson button build his reputation upon. if a driver thinks its dry enough you give him dry tyres. its baffling that race engineers think they know more than drivers on the track

Wow, Nico gets a three place grid drop for screwing up the speed delta when returning to the pits but not risking anyone.

Sainz gets the same penalty for driving like an absolute fruit loop.

Yeah, seems fair to me.

:givemestrength:

They could easily start the race coverage on Sky,half an hour before the race starts. This 1 and a half hours is just to long.
its sky idea now to get there money's worth from their rights that they have overpaid for. they have exploded the tv rights like 4billion for the premier league, & 1.2 billion for F1. there paying the price now. with paycuts & big names leaving

I enjoyed that, completed three levels of Candy Crush, looked at some cars I couldn't afford on Autotrader, worked out my travel arrangements for tomorrow and caught up on some e-mails. Always good to get some time to yourself to catch up on things. Then I noticed it was the last lap of the race and Max had won. Who would have thought?

Teams may as well breach the cost cap, so you get your punishment in a few years time. This season is now dead.
That did not surprise me given they've already gained the knowledge to make it go quicker it was not like spygate where Mclaren were instructed not to go down certain routes

The season is done in terms of Verstappen will be champ

It is a matter of if Perez can keep 2nd place because his confidence has been shot to pieces since his Monaco crash

yeah that wasnt a great race but then the current state of F1 it wont be great, but it was alright race behind until it petered out with 15-20 laps to go.

as ive felt for a few races now, you cant blame red bull adrien newey is on top form & whereas red bull went forward mercedes went backwards & god knows whats happened with ferrari they say that if you get the rules right your advantage is baked in for many seasons. but ferrari have manaaged to go from having the best car to being 4th quickest in 12 months

Another Red Bull, lights to flag victory and a dull race but a chunk of credit needs to be given to Alex Albon who kept his Williams ahead of several cars while he had ailing tyres and without DRS.

Hopefully Williams have found some upgrades that have brought them up into the pack.

I aced 96% accuracy in my Japanese lessons and found this on autotrader, forgot there was a race on, was in bed before the chequered flag.

alex albon has fully recovered from being chucked in the deep end at red bull, he has driven brilliantly for the last 15 months. i dont think he's norris level yet where he could be at a big team but he certainly a bit like perez at force india. best of the rest

The change in the regulations regarding the floor sent them backwards.
& true the raising up hasnt helped, but as we know now, red bull floor is so much more complex than everyone else

could we see the unthinkable at aston martin with his dad finding a replacement for his son because in any other team where you have 1 driver with 6 podiums in 8 races chasing perez & his teammate have results of 6th DNF 4th 7th 12th DNF 6th 9th fending off ocon & gasly. you would say like Riccardo the writing is on the wall. but this is a special case

If a Dad goes to the length of buying a whole team so his son can have a drive I find it a tad unlikely that he's going to sack the boy mid season.

Now, if you ask me, will Stroll senior buy an Indy Team and junior suddenly express a wish to go racing in the US at the end of this season? That's a possibility.

Indycar certainly possibility or Aston Martin are suddenly interested in Formula E

but i was saying to my f1 mate, when discussing this because i linked stroll to a boss hiring his wife as a receptionist. no matter how bad the employees think she is, the boss cant sacked her. but im glad im not Lawrence stroll because that is horrendous place to be. to think what do you put team 1st as you expect either McLaren driver maybe Ocon. would have the team comfortably in 2nd. or do you put your son 1st
