Things ... 2015 - 2016 Silly Season. The Drivers Market.

well Pastor needs to be turfed off the grid for good

Gutierrez - its hard to say how good he really is given Hulkenberg thrashed him at Sauber and his other season he got no points

Dash Racing Yeah. I'm afraid the facts lie. Brawn were BAR and Honda and took years to get it right. The last brand new from scratch team to get a race win was Stewart who of course became Jaguar and then Red Bull.

I'll give you Alfa back in the old days but I'm afraid in modern F1 the idea of starting a team from scratch and being at the front winning things is a near impossibility.

As I recall, Toyota knew they couldn't race - they were the team that had the T13 accidents - and gave Trulli a light load.

Wasn't Ralf on pole in Japan that year too - weather assisted.

Even then Toyota had been in the sport for a few years and still couldn't do it. The likelihood that Haas are going to come in next year and be competitive is very small. If, like Tony Fernadez did, they believe its going to happen that quickly then I suspect the project will be doomed from the start.

Hopefully they have realistic expectation and I suspect by the way they are piggybacking Ferrari they do. A podium in the first 5 years is probably what they should be aiming for.

I never said it wasn't a longshot, and I'm a bit of a dreamer (I couldn't be an artist and writer if I wasn't). But if we're truthful, in this decade, if you join any team but Mercedes, Ferrari, or possibly Williams or Red Bull, you're doomed. You're as likely to conquer all in a new team as you are in any but those top four. Yes, Haas could be a total disaster, a la BAR (who were Tyrrel before that), but the dreamer in me is saying they can't possibly suck as bad as BAR (and this year's McLaren Honda... yikes!) Yes, you can join a sure thing in a midfield team and know reasonably that you'll be in the points as often as not, but getting a seat in any of those can relegate you to a life of midfield running, or a boot out the door as soon as someone new with some backing comes along. Taking those seats at Toro Rosso especially is a risky proposition, Formula E's filled with people who got shown the door by the Red Bull driver development program.

Well we seem set for the unsilliest of silly seasons with absolutely no movement whatsoever and whilst there is a lot of focus on whether Vandorne will miss out I just wanted to mention and cast an eye over to the WSR 3.5.

The 3.5 series has not failed to graduate a driver from its ranks directly into an F1 seat in 6 years. 3 of them jumped up for 2015 alone. This season the series has two of the best drivers I've ever seen in 3.5 battling it out for the championship but poor old Rowland and Vaxivere are not going to get a sniff of an F1 seat and probably just going to be added to the list of coulda/shouda beens.

It just makes you realise the Motorsport and Comedy are very similar in the fact the the most important thing to them is timing.

Back on to the subject of Haas. We have confirmation a 'Ferrari reserve driver' will have one seat:

F1 news: Ferrari reserve driver will get one Haas Formula 1 team seat

Thats either Gutteriez or Vergne then. I would probably prefer Vergne but I get the sense that Gutteriez appears to be well thought of by all. I don't buy the sponsorship line as Gutteriez has very little personal backing. Maybe being Mexican is an attraction though.

As for the other role Haas says he's looking for an 'experience F1 Driver - No rookies' which is one in the eye for Alexander Rossi. KMag and Grosjean are on his list. I imagine that will mean KMag unless the Enstone/Renault buyout plans go up in smoke.

KMag might just push him to the front of the queue ahead of Rossi and Van Doorn as apparently he has fallen out with Bouillier and can see his career stagnating and forgotten whilst Van Doorn going on an upward trajectory career path

RasputinLives Sorry did not see that bit :) I was seriously thinking Rossi with his late surge in GP2 lately and sharing the same name as the Doctor would be very attractive for the US market

Then looks like K Mag might be in for a shot . I can definitely say though Button with his reputation does not appear to be interested

Just looking at the teams confirmed

Merc engines - Mercedes, Williams, Force India

Ferrari - Ferrari, Haas,

Honda- Mclaren

TBC

Red Bull and Toro Rosso - Ferrari probably

Sauber - ?
Manor - Mercedes likely
Lotus- Renault or bust

I see Sauber may have to take a Honda engine if Renault decide to leave F1 because Ferrari and Mercedes need special dispensation to provide more than 3 teams under current regulations and allowing either of them up to 5 teams will raise serious questions about "fair competition"

the only joker in the pack is if Red Bull do a swerve and kiss and make up with Renault:friends: not a chance or been secretly talking to Audi to get them involved which also seems improbably given this late stage

--------------------------------

With regards to Lotus/ Renault - I just thinking were they not to enter F1 in 2016 then Manor would be guaranteed their money in the constructors championship and would it sway them in their driver line up

Not sure if anyone has picked this up but there are rumours that Romain Grosjean may have signed for Haas in Singapore due to the Lotus/ Renault uncertainty which means a lifeline potential for JEV at Renault if it comes to fruition

Or, I thought it might be that Grosjean made the deal with Renault, and since Lotus and Renault haven't made any announcements regarding the team, Grosjean cannot explain where he will be driving next year?

It is a rumour that he does not want to hang around waiting for a resolution over the uncertainty at Lotus/ Renault which could also spell the end of his career
