Pre-Season 2012 Testing: Barcelona

Ted also tweets:- "And Mark Webber admits Red Bull need to improve the car for Melbourne, 'no question', says there's less grip than Jerez, esp last sector."

Interesting video with Webber here, it's at the start of the video labelled "testing day for di resta" - http://www1.skysports.com/formula-1/news/12433/7540832/Mixed-day-for-di-Resta

He says they have less grip than in Jerez and does not sound half as confident as he did back there.

Don't believe a word.

Plus, that translation is appalling!

Wow - http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/97662

It appears that it is official so my source cannot be so bad after all. Maybe wait a little next time before shooting something down. I only posted it because it was all over twitter and even in the press. It was just at the time, that was the only official article on it and as it was not in English I just put it through a translator!

There seems to be a big difference in the imminent threat level.

Typical F1 sensational type article. Why do these people overstate everything.
Last year it was Pirelli marbling a serious issue.Turned out that was false.Lotus have a chassis problem this year.
Ah its a serious issue if they have abandon testing.Their season is all ready over comments.
And they will be at Barcelona next week testing.

Tyre wear doesn't appear to be an issue today...

Those times are on a par with his middle stint yesterday snowy, so would guess its on the same tyres. From the rest of yesterdays times, I would say he went on the harder tyres first..

Sporsman - I appreciate you're a Lotus fan defend them to the hilt but thats not quite what was said - it was stated that it would be damaging for their up and coming season and to be fair you have no idea yet whether it will be or not however a chassie falling apart and having to be withdrawn can never be viewed as a good thing can it? Even if they've managed ot pull off a miracle fix that hasn't effected other areas of the car you have to admitt that missing a weeks testing when you have 2 drivers who haven't driven in F1 since 2009 has to be damaging.

First and foremost I am not a Lotus fan.In fact I am not a fan of any team or driver.
I am only interested in fair comments .Your comment that their chassis was "falling apart" seems rather overstating the case to my eyes.
Losing test days can never be a good thing I agree. But that is the whole object of testing. To identify problems and rectify them before the first race in Australia.
In fact they will not "lose a weeks testing".They are expected to granted one extra days testing in the same manner as granted to Mercedes so in reality they effectively only lose two days.

Are you sure? I just assumed because you've lept to their defence evertime a comment has been made against them even before this (I suggested they may have been showboating for the Kimi headlines). I guess I won't assume from now on.

The Chassie was not holding together correctly was the statement issued by the team therefore falling apart might be an extreme way of describing it but technically correct.

and being granted and extra days testing after missing a 4 days test doesn't seem the best deal to me. I think its fair to call this a set back for the team.

Barcelona test finishes early for Lotus F1 Team
Lotus F1 Team will not run for the remainder of the second test at Barcelona, scheduled from today until Friday.
During initial runs this morning with Romain Grosjean at the wheel, the team identified an issue with the chassis. After investigation at Enstone, initial plans to bring out chassis E20-01 to Barcelona have been held in order to give the team enough time to rectify the situation.
Lotus F1 Team will be back on track next week in Barcelona (1-4 March)
James Allison, Technical Director:

“Before we were due to fly chassis E20-01 out to Barcelona in replacement of chassis E20-02 - damaged this morning - we ran a series of simulations at the factory based on the data provided by our brief running on track today. As a result, we were able to identify an area which requires some additional work. It will be more productive for us to carry out these modifications to both chassis at Enstone rather than send E20-01 out to this week’s test. We’ll put the right measures in place and we will be able to fix the problem before next week.”
Eric Boullier, Team Principal:

“Not running this week has been a tough decision to take, but we feel that our choice is the right one. On the positive side, we have quickly identified the issue with the chassis and our design office has already devised a solution. We will be present at next week’s test in Barcelona. We draw faith from the fact that the E20 was quick out of the box in Jerez and showed its reliability there. We have a lot of work ahead of us over the next week but everyone at Enstone is ready for this challenge.”

If indeed that was a race simulation by Rosberg then the times look quite good. They look fairly similar to what Vettel / Hamilton did on Wednesday.

Also, Button's time of 1.23.2 on Hard tyres is probably the most speed McLaren have shown so far during testing. Pirelli say there's approx 0.6 between their tyres, so that means he could do a 1.21.4 and that's only assuming he was running on fumes, which is probably unlikely. All in all I think that's a pretty good lap time. He actually did a 1.23.4 on hards a short while after but did a better first sector time too.

Clearly none of the big 4 have shown their hand yet but to note their best times and tyres thus far:-

Vettel:- 1.22.891 (Soft)
Alonso:- 1.23.180 (Super-Soft)
Schumacher:- 1.23.384 (Soft)
Button:- 1.23.200 (Hard)

It still obviously means nothing overall in comparison, but it is probably the most impressive burst of speed shown by any of the top 4 teams so far and it's nice to know McLaren look like they're not too bad over 1 lap.

I know it's early days and the Vicar has been using the stickiest tyres quite a bit, but on the evidence of all the tests so far, do we think Williams are maybe on the up and Caterham going backwards a bit?

Hmm... I seem to remember Wiliams saying they were in negotiations with a telecommunications company....

Oh, no wait, that was Bruno... Sorry Embratel....

My guess is that Williams are trying it on a little, but they have undoubtedly improved, but they need to justify the Venezuelan money that's coming their way - due to the investigation going on in Venezuela!!! - Hence why Maldo has been rocket ship fast, but neither Senna, nor the test driver, were that quick.....

I seem to remember Williams topping the time sheets this time last year as well so I'm making no judgements on them just as of yet. It does seem that the teams who are trying to attract sponsors or backing have a habbit of looking quick this time of year.

As for Maldo - his problem has never been getting the lap times in - just getting them in on race day!
