I know what you mean, but it could be any number of things... Yes, they might be worried that things will break, or they may not have the spare parts yet. Otherwise, they might be doing setup work, making small changes to make the car faster or more driveble, doing back to back laps - usually the drivers can tell in one lap whether the change is good or not.

On the other hand though they may feel that if they can qualify well, they can hold position. Toro Rosso especially seem to have done a lot of qualifying simulation and that might be just to get their (new) drivers used to it. The same is true of Romain of course. It is also worth thinking that with Caterham properly in the mix, there are three cars to drop out in Q1 (not just one as we have had in the last few years).

Sauber (like McLaren and Red Bull) seem to have been doing 5 laps and really trying to understand the tyres (not just making the car faster, but making it faster for longer, ie. how do tyres degrade if you start hot vs taking less earlier). I think Sauber might have found something, perhaps in the exhaust, as Red Bull does seem to be following their lead (RBR may have thought of it independently as well of course).

Force India have been taking a much more transparent approach and they seem to have long run and qualifying pace and Caterham have obviously made a big step too.

There is though a big difference in how the tyres are used by the bad ones (Mercedes & Ferrari) and the good ones (McLaren & Red Bull). It looks to me like Merc & Ferrari could find themselves ahead of Lotus, Force India & Sauber on the grid but falling into their clutches in the race. I think Williams, Toro Rosso and Caterham are a little behind.

But I'm really just guessing . That's why I'm really looking forward to Melbourne to find out!

Seems like the bookies have changed their opinion on Lotus.Two weeks ago I put £100 on them at 80/1 to win the WCC this year.
Now same site is offering 20/1 odds for WCC.

They were quite low odds at the start of testing as well, so it seems we've come full circle. This season the general opinion of bookmakers seems to be it is going to be much closer. Both Lotus and Mercedes have reasonably low odds.

One of the themes I foresee in this season is extremely exciting qualifying sessions again. It looks like the gap between the midfield and the top teams is far closer, so that could mean that some of the top drivers get caught out, cough - Massa - cough.
