Cheers for posting the times Snowy. I noticed you did this the other day, but only just took todays times to have a quick look at them. Don't think you can take much from them though, just me being a bit of a nerd. Looking at the times of Red Bull and Mclaren in particular, Red Bull's times were very consistent early in the day, which can only please them. Mclaren seem to be doing their own thing today. Were about a second on average quicker than Red Bull. Again, meaningless data without fuel loads.

Massa, Di Resta, Perez, Ricciardo and Senna all completed of very nearly completed race simulations before the rain came.

Approximate start of race simulation:
Massa started lap 54, Di Resta started lap 46, Perez started lap 53, Ricciardo started lap 53 and Senna started lap 37

Perez looks quick! I am looking at the pace around the 20th lap which is the first timed lap on the third stint. In last year's race, Vettel did a 27.4 while Hamilton was the only other in the 27s. From what I have seen, this year's Red Bulls & McLarens can do a 26 at the same stage with most of the others in the low 28s. Perez though has a 26.9...

That Mercedes should be arrested for murdering its tyres. Rosberg does a 22 something and within a few laps is down in the 26s... .

It looks very very close. I think it becomes harder for the top teams to find time as they get lower and lower, which gives the rest of the pack a chance to close the gap. The spread of the 10 teams running looks much closer. Caterham should challenge the midfield this year. I dread to think how far behind Marussia and Hispania are going to be. If they can't even make it to the pre-season tests, how are they going to compete.

Just as an aside, McLaren have followed a familiar route as they felt that it would help development through the season, if they started from a position that they understood.

Red Bull have been the pace setters for the last few seasons, and have shown a good understanding of their car and the updates, and seem to be able to dial the car into the updates as well if not better than most.

Ferrari seemed to have difficulty closing up on the field last season, and a little in 2010, starting the season with a radical car could be an issue when it comes to bringing speed to the car, especially as they seem to be having a little difficulty getting to grips with the car.

Mercedes and Lotus last season seemed to drop further off the pace as the season went on, and it reamins to be seen if they can improve this season, although Lotus have taken a less radical route this season.

I think it could be interesting, although, I am bracing myself for a 2 horse race for the WCC.

I've been playing around with the lap times posted by Snowy and in particular the race simulations. I've been able to roughly align race simulations of Ferrari, Sauber Toro Rosso through when the rain hit. I think Force India's race simulation came earlier in the day. Produces some interesting results, though it is hard to read them all on top of each other.

The first thing you'll notice is Ferrari were going a lot slower than the Toro Rosso and Sauber. You'd have to assume they weren't running race fuel, perhaps trying to hide their speed. The next thing you'll notice, if you look a little closer, is the tyres degrade faster than the fuel burns off. All of the stints follow a similar pattern where the lap times get lower for the first initial laps while they are warming up, before the times slowly, but consistently get higher.

I'm hoping others will have some info on the tyres the teams were running, as i'm interested by the length of the stints by each team. Here are the lengths of each stint, roughly.

Ferrari 11, 10, 14, rain, 5, 8, 18
Force India 11, 11, 15, 11
Toro Rosso 15, 13, 12, rain, 13
Williams 12, 18, 21, 11, rain, 10

Also, average times of runs without rain:
Force India 1:29.4
Williams 1:30.5
Toro Rosso 1:30.6
Ferrari 1:31.3

Something tells me Ferrari won't be almost a second slower than Williams this season.

Similar race simulation chart for day 2. Ferrari, Lotus and Caterham ran race simulations. Is it me or does Ferrari's tyre degradation catch anyone's eye?

Average Times:
Ferrari 1:28.9
Lotus 1:29.1
Caterham 1:31.0

Stint length:
Ferrari 10, 10, 14, 16, 15
Lotus 12, 15, 12, 25 :o
Caterham 18, 19, 15, then the data gets a tad odd for their final stint or stints

Well from this table it certainly suggest so. Ferrari ran one more set of tyres than Lotus and still had a higher rate of degradation. The numbers are seconds lost per lap from when they get them up to speed (their fastest lap), till they have to pit.

Don't have a clue how you post a table, but if you look at the thumbnail Ferrari's average degradation was over 0.2 second a lap. Lotus managed a 25 lap run on one set. In all honesty though, tyre degradation looks high at the moment for all teams.

EDIT: Added Day 3

Does anyone know if Lotus have done any race simulations yet because all im hearing is that they're doing lots of qualifying laps, and couple of 5 lap stints, explaining why there always on top

Looks high to me. Particularly on day 2. I'll try break it down.
I agree john. Them and Merc have the worst tyre drop off that I have seen.

Romain did a race sim on Friday, including a very long 25 lap stint on hard tyres in the1.27s.
