"Vettel was 0.8secs slower than the Mercedes on both short, qualifying-style runs and longer race-style runs, which is completely contradictory to their form in testing, when all their rivals felt Ferrari were ahead....

Adding to the confusion, on the race-distance runs late in second practice, Vettel on the fastest 'soft' tyre was only very slightly faster than team-mate Charles Leclerc on the slowest 'hard'.

Alfa Romeo's Kimi Raikkonen was fifth quickest - just 0.099secs behind his former Ferrari team-mate Vettel.

That margin added to the suspicion that Ferrari might have been playing games because the margin between Vettel and Raikkonen was smaller than it was on average between them when they were team-mates. So for Raikkonen to be that close in a car that will undoubtedly be slower only emphasised the point that Ferrari can find plenty more time."

I'm sure Ferrari are holding back but then again I'm sure Merc aren't in party mode either. I doubt the gap is 0.8 but I'd be surprised if it turns round that much that Merc aren't the quickest car.

I have been wrong about these things before of course.

RB and Ferrari are sandbagging, there is no way they are only a tenth quicker than Alfa and Renault.

I don't know about RBR either... I think they're having some problems... with their package being too extreme. Hope Honda delivers

    Hmmmm, let's see.

    Hamilton's P2 time = 1:22.6 which equals 82.6 seconds.

    82.6 x 1.07 = 88.382 = 1:28.382

Kubica's time = 1:26.655, he is only 1.727 seconds off the limit.

Minardi were much closer than that just before they became Toro Rosso and were getting closer whereas Williams are dropping away. They are in dire straits.

Bill Boddy good math! It was too early for me to remember a simple percentage sum doesn't take into account the 60 seconds in a minute. I'm going to use lack of sleep as an excuse.

Not surprised. A Kubica and a Williams car, it's what reality is.

Looking at the tyre stints Ferrari were clearly messing around in practice 2 to see how they perform. Leclerc spent a lot of time on hards. Still think 0.8 is a big one to turn round though.
