Snatched defeat from the jaws of victory

These are the guys who lost the lead with less than 10 laps to go.

Reasons for losing lead are not necessarily accurate.

I can't find a thread like this, so I ask, which drivers were on their way to an emotional or memorable victory of some sort until fate cruelly intervened.

Here are a few I can think of:

1984 Brazil- Warwick leads on debut for Renault until Suspension failure
1986 Australia- Rosberg retires from lead (and F1) with tyre delamination
1990 France- Capelli overtaken three laps from the end by Prost
1991 Belgium- Alesi retires from the lead/de Cesaris posturing for memorable Jordan win until gearbox failure
1992 Canada- Brundle goes out whilst dramatically closing on leader Berger
1995 Italy- Ferraris denied famous 1-2 by a mechanical failure and an on-board camera taking out a suspension
1996 Monaco- Hill's Renault engine blows up whilst he leads comfortably.

Any more?

Mansell. In Canada. Waving to the crowd on the final lap at the Hairpin. A bend and a chicane away from the Chequered. Patrick Head was furious! Painful for Williams! Piquet nearly 'came', though! Hehe.

2008 Budapest - Massa's engine blows up. Kovi takes win.
2010 Korea - Vettel's engine blows up. Alonso takes win.
2011 Canada - Vettel cracks on last lap under pressure. Button takes win.

1997 Hungary - Damon Hill in the arrows losing out on victory on the final lap because some small part went (cant remember what it was)

Bruno Giacomelli at Watkins Glen 1980 - admittedly he only led for 32 of the 59 laps but in such a tragic season for Alfa a race win would would have been a great bonus and Jack O'Malley was such an engaging character. He never came close again :(

Brabham did it twice in 1970, with Rindt being the beneficiary both time-

Monaco GP, Black Jack has brain fade and goes into the barriers on the last lap

British GP, Jack runs out of fuel on the last lap.

I almost forgot, the one I consider the most heart-breaking of all

1972 French GP, held on the late, lamented Charade circuit--

Amon off in a commanding lead, in a Matra. Gets a bloody flat tyre from one of the myriad stone chippings on the circuit and has to pit for a new tyre. Comes storming back, repeatedly shattering the lap record and finishes third. He undoubtedly would have won without the flat. Unfortunately, this was Chris's last real shot at a victory in his career.

Does Jim Clark at Monza in 1967 count?

He qualified on pole, then had a puncture, returning to the race in 16th position. He than worked his way back into the lead only to run out of fuel within sight of the finish. He managed to roll across the line in third position.

The odd thing is that although he ran out of fuel he was driving a Lotus rather than a McLaren.:)

Edited to correct dyslexic date.

You might want to edit that to '67 ;) I was going to mention that race - arguably the greatest drive of all time.

Hakkinen. 2001. Spain. 37 seconds clear. Last lap. Nightmare.

Also, where does Monaco 1982 fit into this? :D

Wasn't Trulli leading for 37 laps in Austria 97 in a Prost Mugen-Honda and have an engine failure? Does that count? Remember being gutted for him at the time.
