Schumacher Injured

A press conference will be held by the French authorities on Wednesday at 11am (10 am GMT). Considering all of the speculation as to why the authorities have been investigating we at least now have some clarity on that.

http://www1.skysports.com/f1/news/1...umachers-accident-to-brief-press-on-wednesday

The investigation has been looking into various factors including:
  • Schumi's "speed when he fell and slammed his head on a rock on a small off-piste section of the Meribel ski resort,"
  • "whether the limits of the ski runs next to the accident site were correctly marked and whether the rock in question was lying close enough to the piste to require some kind of protection or signage."
  • "whether the safety releases on Schumacher's skis operated properly"
The investigation is "aimed at determining responsibility for the accident."

Hopefully we can stop arguing about whether or not. or why the accident should be investigated and get on with wishing Schumi well and hoping for a speedy recovery.

Tragic news reaching the main news services in New Zealand are reporting that Michael Schumacher might remain permanently in a vegetative state, unable to move, speak or feed himself. We can only pray for a change that would lead to some form of recovery. In saying that what would a man like Michael wish for if he were able to have a choice. Absolutely awful news. :(

There is no such story being told in this half of the hemisphere and if it is true then shame on the New Zealand press for leaking such a story before any official announcement and if it is not true then shame on the New Zealand press for making up such a story just to flog their stupid fucking red topped rags..

I fucking hate the gutter press.........>:(

Mephistopheles

This story hasn't come from the gutter press, I wouldn't have made this posting if it had. The news has been constant on Television New Zealand, New Zealand's Government owned and partially funded broadcasting network, much the same in reputation as the BBC in its finest days.
No one likes to hear news like this but when it comes through normally reliable sources it's unfair to shoot the messenger. I for one pray that someone has got this wrong but it doesn't appear so.

Mephistopheles

One more point, this story is not being made up in the southern hemisphere. It is very much a European story being sourced in Europe and as also being published on your side of the world though it hasn't reached the mainstream media over there yet.
Maybe I need to point out, the sun rises in New Zealand before Britain, to be precise our current day is over before your's has begun. We are always first in the world to print any major news story. That doesn't mean our media lacks truth and it's offensive to suggest it does.

Kewee forgive me it is just that I do not want it to be true, him being dead I could get to grips with but this is just fucking wrong for a man of his achievements in the sport that I love...

The only "vegetatitive" reports we have been getting in the UK so far have come from the gutter press (and I include the telegraph in that) and they all refer to the same "sources" (i.e the speculations from "a specialist" in Austria and so on and other sources from 5 minutes-of-fame-merchants.

There is a serious element of stink hanging over the way the mirror, mail and others have been reporting on this. The telegraph says Schumacher "may remain in a vegetative state" while simultaneously in the same article claiming there "a wall of silence" coming from the hospital staff (...) Which tells you everything you need to know about the telegraph really...In other words, nothing in the way of reports has come from hospital staff.

Now correct me if I'm wrong but the press was explicitly requested to stay away from the hospital nearly a month ago, so a "wall of sicence" is precisely what we were to expect in an ideal world. Probably didn't stop some of the tabloid hacks from trying to gain access though. And the pressure to come up with a story - any story - is obviously the motivation here.
As for the assertion of some "expert" in no way related to events in Grenoble that the brain cannot withstand being maintained in an induced some for a month or longer, that is quite frankly complete bollocks.

Until we get any direct info directly from the hospital staff or the family first hand, anything we will hear from anybody else will be complete and total speculation.

Mephistopheles ….. I feel the same Meph. We only have a very limited tabloid gutter press in New Zealand thank goodness.
I'm sure our mainstream press and television wouldn't have run with this if they didn't feel comfortable the story carried a fair element of truth. I'm hoping they've got it very wrong.

And a very good link too, from someone with a straightforward and sensible outlook. Makes a nice change from the sensationalist and irresponsible drivel coming out of some sections of the mainstream press.

Specialists often get things very wrong. I know from personal experience of someone very close to me. We were given the most dire warnings in the early days, but the person in question was made of stronger stuff and has made a huge recovery, not back to 100% for sure, but nothing like the predictions from the medics. However enough of a recovery to be leading a life worth living.

Looking at the post by the F1 Doctor I would be even more positive. In our case we were told that he would not walk,.. he walks(slowly) with a stick, ...he would be incontinent, he's not, ..speech is very slow, but he speaks.. he has a sense of humour, and an appreciation of life, art and music. Some aspects of his life are very difficult. But a man like Schumacher is a fighter also, as long as he's encouraged to beat the odds he may well do it.

Too true. When I was 10 or 11, my doctor told me I would be lucky to live to 30, which put a bit of a downer on things. I suspect Michael's doctors are a bit better than mine was though.

Scary - I'm just 50, given a 40% chance of survival due to asthma at 8 months, parents told I wouldn't live past school age unless we moved..... which we didn't

Did you have a rybavin inhaler with the resulting wrists that could unscrew oak trees?

Going OT here but I didn't even get a Ventolin/Salbumatol inhaler until the 80s. They did give me Salbutamol in tablet form though which was basically speed and quite good fun! Maybe doctors got a kick out of upsetting children in those days?

Somehow I knew that birthday was special! Very glad I stayed up to do that poster!

Back to the OP ... I've had a great deal of respect for Gary Hartstein ever since I first heard about him when the FIA "missed" the opportunity to give him Prof Sid Watkins' job. One would think Schumi's family would invite him to help them keep the media on track in a more formal way. Perhaps then the news peeps would pay attention and exercise some patience.

Best wishes and hopes to Micheal
