Current Robert Kubica

He's fast, Polish and a bloody brilliant racer. To me Kubica is a special talent and has been very unlucky to not find himself in a top team yet.

The thing i like about Kubica is that he's a trier and never gives in say if he was third and had a sniff of second he'd go and chase the second place man down. He's a much toned down version of Lewis Hamilton IMHO he's great at overtaking (Austrailla 2009) exception and if he was in a better car i think he'd a won more races than the current 1 he stands at.

Kubica made his F1 debut at the Hungrian GP in 2006 replacing the injuried Jacque Villeneuve for BMW Sauber. He'd outqualified teammate Nick Heidfeld at the time and finished the race in 7th place only to be DSQ for been under weight. Since Kubica's first and only Pole Position came at the 2008 Bahrain GP, that same season he'd broke his winning duck and won his current and only race in Canada. Kubica has stood on the podium 12 times and in his 76 race he's scored a total of 273 points.

Sad news broke eariler in the year (2011) that Kubica had been involved in a Rally competition and crashed, his life was said to be in the balance, but he's slowly recovering from nasty injuries he substaned in the accident. It remains to be seen whether Kubica will return to motor-racing. But for me Kubica is a talented driver and if we do see him back on the grid i'd be over the moon.

Whether you like him or not Kubica is a cool guy and one that i'd like to see become Champion if he return's to the sport.

How do you rate Kubica?

I've been saying the same thing as Brogan and Speshal for over a year too. It's always been highly unlikely he'll be back in F1, let alone be competitive. Looking at even the most recent pictures his hand and arm are still deformed and atrophied. I really can't see that changing. The door is closing.

Perversely, it'd be good for me to be made to eat my words sometime in the future though.

Apparently this is Kubica recently testing a rally car:

"Ribadisco che siamo certi al 100% che al volante della Clio S1600 nel video ci fosse Kubica"
"I repeat that we are 100% sure that behind the wheel of the Clio S1600 in the video was Kubica."

Is the car moving in this pic? If it is, then it isn't Kubica driving.

The video is just the clips of when Kubica was in the car. That photo is of Andrea Crugnola driving whilst Kubica watched, they were both testing the car & covered 40km between them I believe.

Testing a rally car on the one hand seems a bit crazy to me, but on the other hand I'm glad to see him testing any racing car at all!!

he's fallen out with Lotus/Renault

Is he still contractually obliged to the team or not ??
don't be surprised if he is testing a Ferrari later this season

My understanding is that their contract is now over, so he could race for anyone. I don't believe he'll race for Ferrari unless he's 100%, they want the WCC and wont get that unless Kubica is competitive. I suggest they'd be far wiser looking at other new talent in F1.

It's also worth noting he's testing the car at the Ronde di Andora rally in the video which is where he had his big crash at last year, so I think he's at least as mentally tough as he was before his accident even if he hasn't fully recovered physically yet.

I'm sceptical that Kubica was actually driving that car. Why isn't there one clear shot of him actually driving it like that? :dunno:

I seem to have lost the quote option

As for Kubica I don;t think Ferrari will lose out in their current position by replacing Massa with him...because they are not expecting Massa to be world champion and really there are Ferrari insiders who want Kubica and don;t rate Massa

Blick.ch's Roger Benoit is claiming the reason there is so little news from the Kubica camp is the chances of him returning to F1 are virtually nil. The English (and Spanish) press are translating what Benoit wrote as "nearly impossible," except Benoit used the verb 'ausgeschlossen', not 'unmöglich'.

My German is about as nuanced as a Panzer MK IV but to me, a door can be closed from either side, so I ask of those who didn't learn their German from watching RTL Samstag Nacht reruns whether his use of 'closed' rather than 'impossible' might also mean F1 have closed the book on Robert.
