Head To Head Nico Rosberg vs Lewis Hamilton

Hi

I don't know if you guys spoke about it, but AMuS release some interesting information about what really happened to Nico Rosberg at turn 3.

AMuS said there is something like an FIA-start-mode that takes over before the start. The FIA-start-mode is supposed to last the first 90 seconds of the race and also override all other programs.

So it means that even though Rosberg had a wrong engine mode, he was not supposed to suddenly lose engine power because the FIA-start-mode was on.

So basically the lose of engine power was not due a wrong engine mode but because of a software glitch. Rosberg had 90 seconds to realize he was on a wrong engine mode.

I sure would be interested to read about that.

Is this to mean that whatever the drivers dial up at the start is irrelevant because the FIA software is supposed to take over and ensure no car could possibly harvest so early? I find this incredible.

And what of the 90 seconds? From when? Until what? Obviously 90 seconds is a lifetime in Formula One terms as well. Please post more about this issue Gamal Liranzo

I haven't read anything at all about an FIA start mode. Surely it would have received lots of publicity, even without the collision in Barcelona, if such a mode existed. Sounds very odd.

Here's the relevant passage translated through google:

FIA-start mode overrides any steering wheel commands

That's right, while wrong. No matter what button Rosberg had pressed at this stage, it would not help. Therefore, it is also misleading when Hamilton claims he has switched to curve 3 in the race mode, while Rosberg was on the road in the starting mode. This is simply not possible. The transition into the race mode is automatic.

For the first 90 seconds after the start of the FIA-start mode overrides all other programs. Thus, the push-to-pass could not function.Nevertheless, Rosberg could not help it. Or a conscious thing. The power loss must have been a software error. Whether it was caused by the formation lap because Rosberg had driven in the starting mode accidentally, it can be clarified by the Mercedes engineers only after accurate data analysis in the factory.

Strange that we haven't heard anything from Mercedes, Rosberg, or the FIA about this software "glitch". That article is from May 15th too.

The fact remains that if Rosberg had been in the appropriate STRAT mode for the start of the race he would not have experienced the loss of 160 hp for about 5 seconds in Lap 1.

I thought this was a beautiful translation though;

The championship leader made early to the door, so that Hamilton only the way remained through the meadow.

Yes, I read it after FB posted the link earlier.

Was there something in the portion of my post that you've quoted that you feel is incorrect?

It was a racing incident that would not have occurred had Rosberg selected the right engine mode.

I read a another article shortly after the race which pointed out Rosberg's error.

Revealed: The switch error that triggered the Rosberg/Hamilton crash

This article shows Rosberg's steering wheel, and its littered with post-it notes to remind him which setting he has to select; perhaps in the wake of no longer being able to receive instructions from the pit wall.

I find this quite revealing since Rosberg is generally lauded as the 'cerebral' driver.

If he's reading post it notes instead of concentrating on his driving, no wonder he got it wrong. As an ordinary motorist we would be fined for, eating, drinking, texting and no doubt reading post it notes whilst driving. What a daft idea. Someone should be shot.
