Team History

The Mercedes team history splits into two parts. In 1954 the famous pre-war Silver Arrows entered the F1 world championship and recorded a 1-2 at their first race. Fangio went on to win the drivers championship that year and again in 1955. Mercedes withdrew at the end of the 1955 season after the accident which killed 80 spectators at Le Mans which involved one of their cars.

The current team entered F1 in 2010 after Mercedes bought Brawn Grand Prix. Brawn Grand Prix, winners of the Drivers Championship, with Jenson Button, and the constructor’s championship in 2009, grew out of the ashes of Honda’s F1 entry after Honda had withdrawn from F1 at the end of the 2008 season after only a single Grand Prix win for Button in Hungary 2006.

Prior to the Honda takeover in 2006 the team had raced under the name of British America racing which had acquired the assets and race entry of the Tyrrell F1 team in 1999. BAR competed in 118 races without a single victory. The high points for the team were 2 pole positions (both for Button – San Marino 2004 and Canada 2005) and 2nd in the constructors championship in 2004.

Tyrrell were amongst the most successful private F1 teams taking part in 463 Grands Prix, scoring 33 victories and 3 Drivers Championships, all with Jackie Stewart.

2010

Having replaced Button and Barrichello with Nico Rosberg and 7 times WDC Michael Schumacher many expected great things of the new Mercedes team in 2010 but they had an indifferent season.

Rosberg managed 3 podiums for the team but Schumacher, coming back from retirement, struggled with the new cars, tyres and limited testing under the revised regulations. The team finished 4th in the Constructors Championship.

2011

For 2011 Mercedes retain the same driver line up and are hoping for better things from their MGP W02 chassis.

if one team had the fastest car and there was one driver who happens to win every race then every one will turn away from F1 for good especially if its the same guy each year with inferior or weak competition

At least the team concept which is flawed if you have two ambitious drivers wanting to be No 1 and duking it out then there is excitement and interest to see which driver comes out on top especially if there are fierce and intense like Senna vs Prost

( although Ferrari and Schumacher decided that should not be the case whilst it got them the titles it came with questionable credibility about Schumacher's achievements especially as his teammate were never allowed to beat him)

Having the constructors recognises what the team of engineers did during the season to deliver competitive cars and reward for their hard work

F1 is too strict with entrant rules. A maximum number of entries is understandable but if you show up with a car that fits the regulations and wasn't bought from another team you should be able to race. 1 or 2. Full season or just a few races.

soccerman17 Well that use to happen but with money at stake imagine all the teams with decided with money rather than design a chassis then lets buy one from an existing because its less time consuming than building one

now that really hurts the small and private teams which is what happened a few years back when they changed the rules to ensure Toro Rosso designed their own chassis and not simply use Red Bull's one and stopped Pro Drive from entering using Mclaren chassis

Brogan I think its a bit too late for that . The only orders you can give is dont take each other off the track and probably a bit of eitquette about settling down into the race first

They can't force Rosberg to yield for Hamilton on track to make amends for this result as he will do what he wants during the race as it has already been seen. Who have Mercedes got as a reserve driver as I'm predicting a team imposed suspension for Rosberg.

To be fair, it would probably make a lot of sense for Mercedes to get one of their drivers sacked to guarantee the Championship, any more squabbling and the grin moves into the rear view mirrors, getting into DRS* range.

*Dhabi Ridiculous Scoring

Mercedes should just substitute one of their junior drivers for Nico at the next race-problem solved. They can still get WCC points from two cars, Nico is properly punished and with any luck the Championship will be reduced to 4 points separating the top 2.

I don't think 'don't hit the car in front of you' is a team order. I think its actually a rule of the sport.
Is it time to bring these back?

Pascal Wehrlein has been announced as the new Mercedes reserve driver. Do you think they will be needing him before the end of the season.
