Team History

The Mercedes team history splits into two parts. In 1954 the famous pre-war Silver Arrows entered the F1 world championship and recorded a 1-2 at their first race. Fangio went on to win the drivers championship that year and again in 1955. Mercedes withdrew at the end of the 1955 season after the accident which killed 80 spectators at Le Mans which involved one of their cars.

The current team entered F1 in 2010 after Mercedes bought Brawn Grand Prix. Brawn Grand Prix, winners of the Drivers Championship, with Jenson Button, and the constructor’s championship in 2009, grew out of the ashes of Honda’s F1 entry after Honda had withdrawn from F1 at the end of the 2008 season after only a single Grand Prix win for Button in Hungary 2006.

Prior to the Honda takeover in 2006 the team had raced under the name of British America racing which had acquired the assets and race entry of the Tyrrell F1 team in 1999. BAR competed in 118 races without a single victory. The high points for the team were 2 pole positions (both for Button – San Marino 2004 and Canada 2005) and 2nd in the constructors championship in 2004.

Tyrrell were amongst the most successful private F1 teams taking part in 463 Grands Prix, scoring 33 victories and 3 Drivers Championships, all with Jackie Stewart.

2010

Having replaced Button and Barrichello with Nico Rosberg and 7 times WDC Michael Schumacher many expected great things of the new Mercedes team in 2010 but they had an indifferent season.

Rosberg managed 3 podiums for the team but Schumacher, coming back from retirement, struggled with the new cars, tyres and limited testing under the revised regulations. The team finished 4th in the Constructors Championship.

2011

For 2011 Mercedes retain the same driver line up and are hoping for better things from their MGP W02 chassis.

I think we're building the footings of a successful team here. Just can't think what's troubling me about this...

Rumours persist. Several sites and blogs running the story. McLaren have declined to comment and nothing official fromMercedes. Wolff had Ben wooing Lowe for Williams and the rumours suggest he now wants him for Merecedes. Rumours that Williams may become Mercedes powered. Rumours rumours rumours.
But Wolff does now own 30%, so I guess whatever he does he's serious about success.

All the stories I have seen all stem from the same article in De Bild.

That said, they have had quite a good hit rate recently.

That said, until an announcement is made, we will not know.

That said, do Merecedes really need another high level technical bod in the crew?

Could there be moves the other way?

Being honest, the Ross Brawn thing is something that I have been expecting for a while now, rumblings have been going on for a significant time, pre-dating the coup with Hamilton.

Intersting times, it would seem the silly season is affecting more than just the drivers these days!!

I can't imagine this is particularly good for Mercedes this late (early?) in the season.

They should have had these people in place long before now.

Although perhaps it's all part of the fabled "2014 push".

Someone told me this a while ago - no names, no pack drill ;)

Looks like an all out push for 2014

Mercedes seem like a team who have no idea what they're doing, what they want nor where they're going.

Not a good position to be in two weeks before testing.

Bringing Lauda on board was a mistake and will be the death of the team, IMO.

It is a lot of changes, maybe too many. But maybe it was needed they have been very poor. It could be this is their long term strategy for the big push in 2014. We have already seen they have the 2014 engine ready.

It seems to me (although I could be wrong) that they are assembling what they see as the best people, which in itself is not a bad thing.

What I think seems to be missing at the moment is the individual with the drive and vision to tie it all together. Roman Abramovic needed Jose Mourinho.

Maybe this is why Wolff has been brought in, or even Lauda, but, looking back to the Honda days, they had the budget, and most of the people, but it was not until they had the vision, in Ross Brawn at the time, that it was all tied together.

As I have said previously, only time will tell.

Like brogan says, I think the fly in the ointment is Lauda. I'd feel much happier if he wasn't there. He's not one of those guys i feel comfortable about

Thats quite a few changes at this time in the development of their car.

As for the qualifying posts a page or two back. Why is it believed that Lewis will be faster than the German he is taking the seat from?
