Just to update, the last two winners are:

2010: Vettel (on 4th places)
Though the medal system has been disowned, thought I'd just show the results continuing!

Yup, regardless of how one views the outcome of Spa 2008 and other dodgy decisions I think that season alone best illustrates the problem with the medals system. The championship is, I think, even more succeptible to being decided in the Stewards room. On the other hand 2007 had its share of controversy as well.

Oh, I don't know, I just don't like medals. I mean, it's the whole Bling thing. Tacky.

The big winners in the medal system are the 3 M's; Moss, Mansell and Massa. Also Clark would have won more under this system.

One of the big losers is Hamilton, the other is Lauda.

90% of the time the driver who dominates is going to win no matter on the system used. A medal system would not allow for the close seasons like last year.

The biggest loser is Nelson Piquet!

That is absolutely not true. I do not support the medals system; but last year Vettel edged Alonso out on number of 4th positions. Thus we'd be in the same situation in Abu Dhabi vis-รก-vis Vettel and Alonso: Alonso needing to finish 4th or better if Vettel won.

I've coloured the differences red to make them clear in a quote box.
