McLaren to promote from within?

Look I'm not suggesting that McLaren are making a mistake all I am saying is don't build him up to much, and still I can't help thinking they have missed a trick by not signing Hulk...

Mephistopheles I think a lot of agree that Hulk would have been a tougher opponent for Button

Well I said Jan in those I think believed all the hype and really had it easy in that Stewart Racing in junior formula looked after him and then Mercedes/ Mclaren did to get into F1.

There was too much expectancy too soon on him and I don;t people realised Stewart Racing in F1 were running No 1 and No2 system

Yeah Jan complained about the lack of testing and disappeared

Its not officially confirmed but

sorry Hamberg. To be fair when I wrote this article I thought Magnusen was only an outside bet and if they were going to change it would be for the Hulk.

But Mclaren look like they are rolling the dice and if they do I'll be pleased as Magnusen has been clearly the best driver in single seaters outside of F1 I've seen all year and deserves a shot.

He may flop hopelessly but he has earned the chance too.

A lot of sources have been saying that Perez will be out and Magnussen in for 2014, alongside Jenson Button. Even Whitmarsh has admitted that Perez might not keep his seat. Would love to see what Magnussen can do in an F1 car in a race situation. He's familiar with the team too, how they operate, where things are, who's who, and appears to have genuine talent

Well looks like it's offical now. Magnussen to McLaren according to Autosport.
I wish him well even though thanks to the tv system in this country I've never seen him race!

Still nothing from Mclaren Dizzi autosport are saying there information is from a 'source'. That could be a person on the inside at McLaren or it could be a bloke they overheard at the chippy.

It does seem to be reported everywhere as fact. But like I say still nothing official from McLaren.

Even the BBC who should report actual facts seem to have published gossip about the move. The latest from Whitmarsh seems to be that "lots" of drivers are under consideration.
As has been noted on another thread I think it will all depend on the Lotus drive, the merry go round is coming to a stop and there will be a mad scramble for the remaining seats.

They must really put a lot of stock by that simulator in Woking but I like the long term thinking. If they believe that Magnussen is that much quicker than Perez and at or above Jenson already, then why not?

Is the simulator that reliable though? Maybe it is at gauging drivers? I worry though because it's been decidedly average on the performance simulation side. Do you think it sits there and tells Martin, 'yes, these parts will give you a midfield car with a ridiculously stiff front end that locks up all over the shop'?

If Kevin really is at or above Jenson's level though, then he deserves his chance. Maybe the relentless negativity from McLaren about Perez has finally gotten to me. It didn't click I guess, but I hope Perez gets another chance somewhere, but he might have to call for Carlos Slim's help again.

MW: Is there anything we can do, o great one?
Sim: Not with your car, Martin.
MW: What then, the drivers?
Sim: Bring in Kevin. I like Kevin.
MW: I thought you liked Gary?
Sim: Gary's not as fast as Kevin.
MW: What about Checo?
Sim: Checo's not as fast as Kevin.
MW: What about Jenson?
Sim: Look, you pick one driver, I'll pick the other...
MW: Can't you just tell us how to improve the car?
Sim: I don't think you've proved your loyalty enough yet, Martin. Bring me Fernando back, and we'll talk.
