McLaren to promote from within?

Vandorne has turned down an offer from Red Bull/Toro Rosso apparently to stay with Mclaren youth programme which is a bold move. He indicates that he won't be in F1 next year and will prob do another year in 3.5 or GP2 (although interestingly he says GP2 holds little interest for Mclaren).

Bold move and says to me he's confident Mclaren are doing the right thing by Magnussen so they'll do it by him.

Fantastic news for McLaren/Vandoorne fans. He should go out and learn to dominate a season and then step into the Macca when he's ready to deliver the serious goods. There will be no shortage of opportunities to get Vandoorne and/or Magnussen into a McLaren-Honda in the next couple years.

KekeTheKing you are right in the fact that Vandoorne will probably be a better driver for another year in 3.5 and his management must have confidence he'll make it to F1 anyway to turn it down. Also seems that the GP2 series is not thought that well of!

Reminds me a bit of when Hamilton's dad was pushing for him to be moved up the series a bit quicker and McLaren insisted he did another year before F1.

Mclaren don't throw rookies into the deep end although the situation with Hamilton was mitigating circumstances

Vandoorne going into the Red Bull aint going because Helmut runs like a conveyor belt and the success rate has been poor and it is deemed once you're at Red Bull and you fail to get into that team it seems to be considered failure

Mclaren has a good history of helping young drivers other drives in F1 even if its not with Mclaren

Blundell, Heidfeld, Zonta, Di Resta , Magnussen

RasputinLives I would not say Helmut's methods are any better with Torro Rosso at least these guys get opportunities elsewhere

With Red Bull it seems like you don't get opportunities outside Red Bull if you fail unless you're poor old Liuzzi

I see what ya saying but I do think the likes of Alguersauri has only himself and his mouth to blame for not getting oppotunities outside of Red Bull.

Will be interesting to see what becomes of Felix Da Costa though. He's still officially in the Red Bull fold but got a funny feeling we might see him switch to GP2 next year and his car won't have the Red Bull colours.

They might be dominating F1 but Red Bull don't seem to be delivering the goods when it comes to developing top drivers. So far they have Vettel and that's it.

McLaren have Hamilton and what looks like two drivers (Magnussen and Vandoorne) who I would not bet against winning a WDC in F1.

If the story of Marko approaching Vandoorne is true then it really does paint of picture of the junior development programme at RB...

well it might seem risky but I think it might give Button an extra incentive to push himself as well if he wants to prolong his F1 career - getting beat by a rookie not something he will want to be remembered for

With Vandorne waiting in the wings too and Alonso apparently on his way for 2015 I don't really see what they have to lose by putting Magnusen in. The possible gains far out way the losses.

teabagyokel no team boss likes to see the repair bills be expensive unless they are really going to tell their driver to charge and fight - funny that was the suggestion to Sergio and does not seem to have worked

Mephistopheles

Jan I think was looked after by the Stewart team during his junior days and I think he thought success came easily having won everything he competed and he was looked after by Mercedes/ Mclaren who groomed as supposedly the next big superstar

It did not help a certain 3 time world champion named Jackie Stewart labelled him " The Best natural talent since Ayrton Senna"

Jan really found things tough at Stewart and blamed on it not getting enough testing opportunities being No 2 to Barrichello
