Niki's helmet in your link actually looks much like his 70's Ferrari helmet:

It's the 70's that has me wondering about the possible regulation. Accidents were at one of the highest rates back then and sadly some of them were very grisly indeed. Being able to identify a driver by the helmet may have been crucial.

I think they are like those steel cables that hold up the Bay Bridge. Its a big cable with lots of little cables inside. In this case they are made from kevlar.

Sorry, should have been more specific. How do they attach them to a wheel which rotates at high speed which if it then breaks off is retained by the tether? I can't imagine it's fixed to the wheel itself (in fact I think that's virtually impossible) so what is the fixed point the tether attaches to?

They go back to the suspension mounts on the upright. This is why if a wheel is not correctly fitted in the pits, or the upright is actually smashed in an impact, you still see the wheel get away. They've been upgraded by regulation over the years and there are now two on each wheel... This year each one has to have a minimum break strength of 70kn which is more than 7 metric ton's!

Has there ever been an F1 race that has taken place NOT on a Saturday or Sunday? Indy 500 doesn't count.

-------------------------------

The Indy 500 was never an F1 race anyway, even when it counted for the WDC. The cars taking part came under USAC (and before that AAA) specifications.
