2016-17 Silly Season. Drivers Market

When you think about it, he is the ideal bloke for the job. He's fast enough for the team. He'd get on OK with his teammate. He'd happily sign on for a year giving Merc more time (to get Alonso?). He'd happily go testing and has put up with crap cars for years so any issues with the new Merc won't phase him.

Seems like a no brainer.

Has anyonementioned Gtosjean yet? When you think about it there are quite a few things about it that would make sense. I don't think he'd be quite capable of matching Hamilton and rock the boat but definitely fast enough to bringthe points and if it was down to him he'd be out of Haas' s doorstep quiccker than an ass' s gallop.

Grosjean is 20/1
Maldonado is 200/1 which is the same as Ericcson.

Paul Di Resta is 50/1 (who would take that bet!) where as KMAG, who let's not forget has driven a Merc powered car and came through a Mclaren Merc driver programme, is 80/1! Where is the sense in that!

Valentino Rossi is 100/1 by the way.

I am going to put a fiver on JB going to Merc at 25/1. personally, I think that given the opportunity for race wins, fighting at the front rather than padding out the midfield, I think he would give it a go. from a McLaren point of view, it means they would not destabilise the driver line up, nor lose a key asset. Mercedes would get a proven winner, who would be unlikely to rock the boat too much, who already knows his way to Brackley.

There are so many levels on which this move would make sense, but only if JB wants to.

Deffo worth a punt!!

A brave decision, hmmmm given the bland corporate nature of Mercedes and the fact that they are almost certainly risk averse, it has to be Wehrlien.

Only Mercedes would consider the most likely candidate 'a brave decision'.

A "brave" decision? Blimey. Maybe they WILL go Maldonado. Couldn't get much braver than that. A bit like a moth flying straight into a light bulb only to chargril its own wings. Daft but definitely brave.

As much as Toto is making noises Mercedes would consider ALonso they simply will be scared off by the fee needed to pay him out of his Mclaren contract

One of the Force India managers said Toto has not spoken to them about releasing Ocon otherwise he would have already done so now releasing the need to not stall on driver choices

My feeling is Mercedes need to sign a top driver because they won the constructors championship having two top drivers..if they say sign Wehrlein or Ocon ( no doubt the former will please the Germans within the company at Board level but probably back home) but it would actually hurt Hamilton's credibility in a way that they are trying to massage his ego by not having a more established teammate

So if Lewis had won the championship next season he would be accused of being the No 1 by default because the team did not encourage internal competition

So its a matter of picking the top guys who are all appear to out of reach or pick the next best lot who maybe not quite good enough to challenge consistently

""We need the quickest guy who makes the least mistakes and understands that this is a team game," added Wolff.

I don't think Wehrlein will get the seat given he's made a few embarrassing blunders not listening to his team

The quickest guy who makes least mistake certainly that can be attributed to Bottas

It is about out and out pace," he explained. "Mistakes are a different topic. Only on very few occasions have we seen Lewis or Nico making a mistake or colliding. More than 90 per cent of the races we've been able to score maximum points, so that is a consideration.

"Then the out and out pace in order to challenge Lewis and grow the general performance within the team. We need somebody that goes lightning fast. To combine all those three factors is what Nico has been able to do over the years.

"We will not change the philosophy. We want to have two drivers with equal opportunities that can race each other, because I think we owe that to the fans and ourselves. It's the way we want racing to happen.

The out and out pace to challenge Hamilton then that sounds like Button who has done it before

16-1 considering the guy retired is very generous odds and certainly not the longshot he started out at the beginning of the week

On the other hand, McLaren haven't had a team sponsor for years so the money would probably come in quite handy. Especially if, as Ron Dennis was saying in an interview last year it really is McLaren - and not Honda - who pay the bulk of his wages.

In any case it would make sense for Mercedes to get someone who can at least challenge Hamilton. They are in it for promoting their product so if they keep on dominating it's no good to them to have a succession of processional races with an obedient number 2. They're not gonna promote much at all if audiences dwindle because one guy gets an easy route to the title.

It rather makes a farce of Mercedes young driver program if it isn't Ocon or Wehrlein.

You wouldn't see Red Bull trying to sign Alonso if Dan left.

I looked at the advert in autosport. Its useless !! There's no contact address to send applications to. I was going to bung my CV in the mix.

I have sent my application:

Dear Mr. Wolf(f),

I read your job ad on Twitter.

I am currently completing a degree course but I can assure you that I can make time to travel with your rabble, win the Championship for you and team the WCC and for myself the WDC and take care of your baby Lewis.

First off, I want to state that I am better than Sebastian Vettel, the four times World Champion, you may have heard of him. He was once beaten by Paul di Resta in F3. My track record proves that I have once beaten Paul di Resta in a karting event on the 31/08/2003. A mile-stone in my career, as he is now considered to be one the most entertaining and knowledgeable pundits of F1.

This fact provides sufficient evidence of my outstanding talent.
Furthermore, I have plenty of expierence racing cars in F1 2004 and I expect next seasons cars to be just as demanding. This also means I have an understanding of car setups and can its identify weaknesses and strengths.

Since 2005 have I learned several languages and am fluent in German and Spanish. I can also communicate in Italian, Finnish and Dutch.

Thank you for taking the time. I am looking forward to working with you.

Yours sincerely

Rutherford
