Autosport report those were on medium but Sky, Espn and a few other outlets report softs - I guess we'll never truly know.
What's interesting is although Lewis is still downplaying the time he set, rather than now taking about getting into the top 10 he's saying they may or may not fight for the championship and should definitely be able to achieve a win during the year. Slowly but surely the truth is coming out.

I worry that we are making assumptions a little too fast. At the first test we were saying how McLaren were reminiscent of the '09 Brawn, but now we are heralding the Merc as the one to watch. Lets just take testing for what it is, a test. We won't know anything for sure until Australia.

It doesn't matter if it's testing, if you compare Lewis' time to that done at Barcelona over the past few years it is very, very fast. It's right up there with the 2010 cars that had double diffusers and the 2011 that had full exhaust blown diffusers. Also bare in mind they have lost a big chunk of time this year with DRS being limited to one or two straights around the track. The only thing that has got faster is the tyres, but whatever way you look at it, Merc is very fast, especially in sector 3 where mechnical grip and traction is king. I reckon their hydraulic linked suspension they've been working on for the past few years has finally come into fruition and Aldo Costa who lead the design of this years car is well known as being an expert in the area of suspension. Their car doesn't have anything on it aerodynamically that is obvious to the eye that is making them quick so I can only assume it's in more mechanical areas such as suspension.
Does anyone know if Ferrari have blown wheel nuts at this test?

Their long run pace is unknown but they've been as consistent as any other team on their long runs and Mark Hughes (who's usually very reliable) commented today that Merc is not just quick but good on its tyres. In-fact, he picked out Lotus and Merc as being better on their tyres than the other front running teams.
All I can say is that it looks like we may well not have the top 2 or 3 this season but the top 5 with Lotus and Merc truly pushing the others. This would produce a thrilling season.

My interesr has picked up with Merc now but mainly because what Hamilton is doing may highlight the fact that the Merc hasn't been as bad as it looked sometimes but has been let down by its drivers. Lets remember at times last year the Mercs one lap pace was with the front guys and sometimes at the begining of races they were running with the front guys but then every time (except for China) they appeated to lose pace and drop down the field. Now I have no doubt they have improved the car and no doubt Lewis is pushing it to be faster but is the real killer that now they have Lewis they have a driver who can consistantly keep the car on its top pace.

Merc's strong point seems their traction and general mechanical grip. This used to be Ferrari's strong point until recently when Aldo Costa left. In 2012 it was Ferrari's largest weakness. Guess where Aldo Costa is now and who was the lead designer of the 2013 Merc?
