Who was saying 2011 was boring?

It's amazing how a few non Red Bull dominated races can change the complexion of F1 and suddenly it's exciting again. However before we get too carried away, Vettel still holds a massive points lead and despite a poor (by his standards) race in Germany, he is still hot favourite as the F1 circus rolls into Hungary.

Hungary isn't known for it's exciting races (apart from 2006 possibly thanks to the weather) due to the dust bowl and lack of overtaking oppurtunities, but if 2011 is anything to go by, the phrase 'no overtaking' has been thrown out of the dictionary.

Despite recent set backs Red Bull will be favourites to bounce back at a circuit which suits them to a tee with weather conditions that will be beneficial to Vettel who struggled with grip at the chilly Nurburgring. However Ferrari and Mclaren have shown that they won't just stand still and let Red Bull walk to the championship with Hamilton and Alonso winning in the last 2 grand prix.

Indeed Mclaren seemed to be in trouble going into the German GP as they were off the pace of the Red Bulls and Ferraris, but in Hamiltons hands the car made a miracle recovery to not only take a front row position ahead of Vettel, but take the teams third win of the season after very stiff competition from Alonso and Webber. Is this the start of the established teams fightback?

Even beleagured Ferrari driver Massa has showed improved form recently with two 5th placed positions in the last 2 races but they could have easily been 2 fourth places had it not been for a strong defensive rearguard from Hamilton in Silverstone and a pit stop mess up in Germany which enabled Vettel to get past on the last lap. As Ferrari plan to take the fight to Red Bull, they will need Massa to take points off Vettel and Webber if Alonso is to have any chance of a miracle fightback.

Mercedes are in a league of their own at the moment, but not in a good way. They are faster than the likes of Renault and Force India, but slower than Ferrari, Red Bull and Mclaren and the 7th/8th place almost has a Mercedes name penned in if there aren't any incidents, (which knowing Schumacher is rare)

Renault have dropped off badly after a strong start to the season and after a crash from Heidfeld and a poor race from Petrov, they now find themselves picking up the scraps in the midfield for 5th place in the championship as Mercedes start to pull away from the black and gold outfit, maybe a tweak of the exhaust might bring them better fortunes in Hungary.

One person who drove a great race in Germany but hardly got any recognition was Adrian Sutil who drove probably the best race of the German drivers. 6th place after a strong qualifying will no doubt relieve the pressure that had been building on him and will show to Di Resta that he won't have things his own way at Force India and that Hulkenberg might have to wait a while for a race seat.

No doubt that there won't be any uncertainties about the weather this weekend as more often than not Hungary provides a race weekend with 30 degree sunshine with not a cloud to be seen, apart from the 2006 race which was notable for Jenson Buttons first win in the Honda.

If you dont want rain I can tell you now that BBc weather, which are being really annoying:givemestrength: now say light showers at 2 o'clock hungarian time which is 1 o'clock English time and whatever o'clock in other parts of the world! Which is basically race time
 
Interesting and revealing comments from Webber on why he was so far back:-

“It wasn’t the smoothest session,” said Webber. “Basically if you look at the last lap, which was the most important lap because it was the only lap I had KERS for, I was very optimistic that I could do a pretty good job. The problems started really on the out lap, because the McLaren’s out lap was like the old Jaguar out laps, just tootling around. They just cruise, and they can go bang, and they have temperature and away.

“We need more pace than that. I couldn’t go any quicker, because JB wouldn’t let me pass. Which is fair enough, that’s all fair game, I don’t have a problem with that. I’d do the same thing if I had to do an out lap like that. And I was also mindful of the fact that there wasn’t a huge amount of time left in the session, I had to keep an eye on that.

“It was my first lap onto the start/finish with KERS and DRS, it looks like I activated the DRS early and it didn’t respond, so I did the whole straight without DRS. The rolling split I didn’t notice that I didn’t have the DRS open because I used the KERS, so the rolling split didn’t look bad compared with my previous lap, because I had the KERS. That in combination with JB, my first sector was a complete disaster. From Turn 5 the lap I did was identical to Sebastian.”
 
Everything just seems to be going Vettel's way this season really, that's tough luck for Webber. There's a very good chance of a McLaren victory tomorrow though, especially if one/both of them can get in front of Sebastien at the start - Lewis has an extra set of tyres and probably had the pace to get pole if things had gone his way, and Jenson is soft on his tyres.
 
I think, for the last time this season, Petrov may take the lead over Heidfeld tomorrow. Heidfeld has been superior on almost every Sunday so far, but Petrov handily beat Kubica here last year and pretty much saved his drive. It won't last though.

We'll see if Hamilton can make a big enough gap early before the Ferrari's tyres warm up...

Gap to what? If Vettel gets away cleanly, Lewis might be stuck behind with no where to go. Remember, too, that Lewis is on the dirty side and there's no guarantee that he won't get jumped by Button from the clean, grippier side.
 
Gap to the Ferraris ray. The ones I mentioned. They're red. My screen is abit dark so I can't see if the text I just wrote was written in red like I wanted it to be but you get the point. The point, once again, being Ferraris.
 
GOD FUCKING DAMN MY COMPUTER

I wrote a none joke response after the last one but my bastard computer restarted itself as it does every ten minutes these days.

The main point being that I favour the Mclarens and Ferraris over the Red Bulls this Sunday. Last race proved that there are another 69 laps down after the first corner scrap under the current rules/team hierarchy.
 
Latest weather forecast suggests cooler temperatures and potential rain showers during the race. Hopefully the showers don't come after the race like last week.
 
Interesting comments from Webber. If a McLaren (or any others) gets a pole this season they really need to cruise the formation lap then to hurt RebBull!

That does require someone beating Red Bull though!
 
Seems to me Webber is just micro analysing too much. The margins at Hungaroring are fine as shown by the difference in lap times between first and sixth, and the smallest mistake could leave you tumbling down the grid. I realise circumstances didn't go his way but overall he just did a poor job.

Anyway, it looks like someone's been keeping Jenson awake...

It's been raining all morning and it's still cold and damp ;conditions are similar to Friday apparently.

The rain will have washed most of the rubber away making the circuit green again, and in fact if it does rain, it's better to be off the racing line as any rubber laid down will be slippery.

So does that mean there is no advantage to which side of the grid you start or if there is, there even numbers are best off?
