The only gas turbine F1 car to take part in a race (three races, actually) - the Lotus 56B

Apparently, the biggest issue with it is that the engine would take so long to spool up (think turbo lag on steroids) that the driver had to permanently keep the revs up as much as possible. This ment carry high revs into a corner and hammering the brakes. The brakes would melt long before the engines packed up.

It wasn't as much of a problem at Indianapolis and the gas turbined Lotus came within a whisker of winning there.
 
Hans Heyer failed to qualify for the 1977 German Grand Prix, but after a crash at the start, slipped out of the pits and took part in the race. He managed 9 laps before gearbox failure, and was then disqualified as he shouldn't have taken part at all.
