The original three films were of the time, in the late seventies and early eighties, there was little to compare, indeed, many modern day films owe a lot to episode IV and the techniques of filming which were invented to portray Lucas' vision.

As a young boy, the sheer wonder in which I watched the film in Watford flea pit, stays with me even now. I was serioulsy pissed off when they made the special editions, no need for those, simply an exercise in look how great I am from Lucas.

The original 3 films, in their original state, to me stand the test of time. Yes, there were flaws, but they were good films.

The later 3 films I thought were wooden, poorly scripted and directed, and had little of the "character" or "essence" of the originals. The reason that the original 3 films were able to get away with the shortcomings were because of the intangible quality that was there, in the characters, despite being a little hammy, the acting too, and the right level of goody vs baddy strung through the trilogy.

the second 3 films for me were a sad commercial and technical exercise, and were all the worse for it. I have never really liked Ewan McGregor as an actor, the only redeeming features of the films being Natalie Portman, and Samuel L Jackson, IMHO.

If further films have made, they will for me need to focus more about the essence and magic of the Star Wars universe, and less on extravagant special effects and super dooper fight scenes, and focus in on what is important. If all you want is explosions and shit, you can do that anywhere you want, see Battleship/Independance day et al.
 
Odeon North End, 1977, Star Wars opens. Queueing around the street, eventually got in to see it after waiting about 2 hours and sat in the circle. At the interval I got an ice cream that came with a cardboard Storm Trooper mask that I loved. Great film, in its day, looks a bit dated now but still worth watching.

Really shows you how good it was to have fixed in the memory so long.

As a result of Star Wars we now all know what a space ship sounds like in a vacuum, know about the force and want a Wookie as a mate.

Not sure round 2 could have such a claim to fame - bit worried about getting a signing candlestick in round 3
 
I'm not really a Star Wars fan, I've saw the first three a while back, and I can't remember the prequels as I saw them a while back too.

However, I caught the first original Star Wars on tv, and I was hooked on to it, and I usually change the channel if a films on which was made before the 90s.
 
mjo - OK, can you watch them in the order IV, V, II, III, VI and see how it works out?

Olivier - I think he is onto something there. I particularly like the idea of the huge twist of III appearing!
 
I already knew about the IV V I II III VI order, great move losing Jarr Jar though! Now if there was only a way of getting rid of Hayden Christensen
